Rights Team Leader, Royalties (Colchester)


We are looking for a Rights Team Leader to join our Royalty Department, based at our Distribution site in Frating, Colchester. The Royalty Department is positioned within Group Accounts which provides accounting and financial reporting for Penguin Random House UK.


The Rights processing team within Royalties are responsible for ensuring that the financial elements of rights contracts are interpreted into the royalty system correctly and that Licensee’s financial statements and payments are allocated accurately.


As Rights Team Leader, you require excellent attention to detail, strong management skills, a flexible working approach and good team working skills.


Key responsibilities:


  • Assist with queries and help with inputting during busy periods. In particular;

       - Setting up Licensee contracts

       - Invoicing

       - Processing statements and income

       - Credit Control

  • Process Intercompany accounting at period end liaising with the Royalty Accounts team
  • Ensure that the non – standard income processing is correct
  • Check to ensure all payee changes are processed on the same day
  • Regularly review outstanding cash and report to the Rights Revenue Manager
  • Liaise with the team to help clear the more significant/older transactions on a timely basis
  • Post journals to SAP for income that needs to be transferred
  • Regularly check the Accepted Write off Report
  • Produce monthly reports of income received for Rights Dept

Management responsibilities: 


  • Monitor team’s workloads and prioritise work according to deadlines and targets. Escalate any issues to the Rights Revenue Manager
  • Review team member’s KPI’s/statistics on a monthly basis and address any concerns
  • Assist with staff recruitment and induction
  • Train and develop staff within the team and recognize and further training needs
  • Carry out annual performance reviews
  • Deal with other staff issues such as holiday and attendance and if necessary carry out absence management reviews
  • Carry out regular one to one’s with team members to discuss workloads and team meetings
  • Build close working relationships with publishing staff – in particular the Rights Department




  • Work closely with the accounts team to ensure Licensee details are held correctly in system
  • Answer queries from authors/agents/internal queries
  • Assist in other areas of the Royalty department when necessary


Experience required:


  • Team leader/management
  • Conducting training
  • Experience in high volume transaction business area where accuracy is essential
  • Strong numerical skills
  • Strong capabilities in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Experience working in a Royalties department would be advantageous.
