Subsidiary Rights Assistant, Random House (Hybrid)

The Subsidiary Rights Assistant joining our team of collaborative ambassadors will work jointly with our experts in licensing rights and report to the Senior Vice President & Executive Director of Subsidiary Rights. A hybrid role working on domestic and foreign rights, this position calls for a solutions-focused individual interested in supporting a team and helping to build book publishing relationships by using creative approaches to pitch current and future titles. This committed reader will be research-minded with a deep interest in reading broadly and proactive when applying these skills to the titles published at Random House. Partnering closely with the team, this assistant will collaborate on our goals to expand the reach of Random House titles to the largest possible readership through licensing around the globe.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Working with the Foreign Random House Rights Team to draft letters and submit material for foreign language rights and work directly with our representatives in each territory (co-agents) and work with production, art, and general backlist research.
- Working with the Domestic Random House Rights Team to draft letters and submit material for audio, serial, and reprint and work with production, art, and general backlist research.
- Communicate with a variety of co-agents and publishers; submit books and direct any requests that arise to the appropriate parties (author interviews, publicity needs, other licensee questions, etc.)
- Read manuscripts and help evaluate the potential value of an acquisition for editorial teams on world rights; work on special projects that involve reprint rights (hardcover or paperback)
- Create and run reports for the foreign and domestic team
- Liaise with multiple internal departments (editorial, production, art departments, and permissions & contracts) to gather materials needed for both foreign and domestic licensees
- Respond to film rights inquiries and thoroughly research any rights that have been licensed to Random House
- Coordinate and prepare materials and schedules for domestic and foreign Book Fairs and be an essential presence in presenting upcoming titles for licensing
- Instrumental in the creation and maintenance/upkeep of Domestic and Foreign Rights Guides (a tool to license rights in the early life of a book) and Backlist Guides (previously published books that are the literary treasure of Random House)

- A proactive reader who keeps up with trends across publishing
- Exercise a curious and strategic mindset to research projects
- Team player with a capability to juggle multiple projects within a deadline-driven environment and skilled in managing multiple inboxes on Outlook
- Timely follow-up skills and ability to keep close attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A strong interest in either licensing/sales or subsidiary rights/publishing is a plus
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Google Survey, Google Docs, and Excel, and an avid interest and ability in learning new applications
- A flexible open ability to share and embrace new ideas and work with the team to streamline and improve processes
- Capability to forge and maintain productive relationships with colleagues in other divisions within the company
- Publishing experience is not a requirement for this role. A committed and avid reader with a broad interest in adult titles will have the most substantial potential for mastering the art of pitching Random House titles to domestic and foreign stakeholders
The salary for this position is $51,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, including but not limited to in-office meetings, foreign publisher and literary scout meetings, and daily ad hoc administrative projects, with an expectation to be in the office approximately three days per week. We will consider candidates who can commute to our office at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
