Senior Publicist, Random House (Hybrid)

Founded in 1925, Random House is the proud publishing house of many of the world’s most acclaimed storytellers, thought leaders, and innovators. Our host of imprints publish original fiction and nonfiction in all formats with the mission to entertain, educate, and inspire readers for generations.  

 

We are seeking a creative, detail-oriented Senior Publicist to join the Random House publicity department. This role involves leading fiction and non-fiction media campaigns for Random House, The Dial Press, Hogarth, and Modern Library imprints. Additionally, you will develop innovative campaigns for priority paperbacks, conduct research and analysis, and build relationships to reach new audiences for reprints. 

 

Our imprints publish such acclaimed authors as: Jon Meacham, Maya Angelou, Yuval Noah Harari, Isabel Wilkerson, David Brooks, Charles Duhigg, Brené Brown, Prentis Hemphill, Tara Westover, Hanif Abdurraqib, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Suleika Jaouad, Elizabeth Strout, George Saunders, Emma Cline, Ruth Reichl, Ed Park, Kelly Link, Curtis Sittenfeld, Hisham Matar, Glennon Doyle, Ann Napolitano, Allegra Goodman, Han Kang, Namwali Serpell, Vinson Cunningham, Elaine Kraf, and Seicho Matsumoto.  

 

The ideal candidate will have experience in strategizing and executing PR campaigns for fiction and non-fiction books with additional focus on media opportunities for paperbacks. The role requires a network of national broadcast, print, and online media contacts, and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, collaborative, deadline-driven environment. Strong communication skills, time management, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. 

 

Specific responsibilities include: 

• Planning and execution of publicity campaigns across the Random House lists each season that maximize exposure for authors and their books: this includes identifying core and opportunity readerships, pitching and securing top national and regional TV, print, radio, podcasts, online media, crafting creative pitches that put our authors into the current conversation, creating dynamic author events with bookstores and venues, independently scheduling interviews, booking travel, and maintaining detailed and comprehensive itineraries, executing galley and review copy mailings, and managing budgets and invoices for each title. 

• Build trust and work closely with authors on all aspects of publicity, including mining behind-the-book content to share with media, messaging sessions to prep authors for interviews, and accompanying authors to publicity engagements. 

• Work closely with the Random House, Dial, Hogarth and Modern Library publicity and marketing team, authors, agents, booksellers, and in-house partners including publishing, editorial, sales and subsidiary rights.  

• High-touch author care and attentive, timely communication with authors and agents.  

• Developing, researching, and maintaining strong relationships with national, online, and local media contacts for frontlist and paperback titles. 

• Attending and presenting at regular sales, publishing and integrated meetings.

• At least 4-5 years of relevant experience in book publishing publicity or related industry  

• Strong interest in book publishing and passion for books across genres 

• Knowledge of the current media landscape, including understanding of social media as a promotional tool 

• Existing relationships with TV/radio/podcast producers, book reviewers and magazine editors  

• Experience working with bookstores and some large lecture venues on multi-city tours 

•  Possesses persuasive and assertive written and verbal communication skills 

•  A creative and strategic thinker and problem-solver 

• Self-starter who takes initiative and works well independently as well as part of a team  

• Experience presenting in front of large groups including internal meetings 

• Strong organizational skills, including experience with detailed schedules, handling strategy and logistics for multiple projects at once, and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines 

• Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively while also responding to urgent issues  

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and internet research 

• Familiarity with Canva, Netgalley, Muckrack, publicity databases are a plus 

 

The salary for this position is $73,500. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.

 

The position of Senior Publicist is a hybrid position with regular in-office responsibilities, which include but are not limited to mailings, in-person meetings, and escorting authors to events and media. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway in New York.
