Senior Designer or Associate Art Director, Avery Tarcher (Hybrid)

These imprints publish acclaimed nonfiction in health, wellness, psychology, science, spirituality, personal growth, and lifestyle—making a positive impact on readers’ lives through accessible and thought-provoking work. Past titles include: Atomic Habits, Set Boundaries, Find Peace, Unwinding Anxiety, Neurotribes, The Book of Joy, Start Where You Are, How We Learn to Be Brave, Good Energy, The Next Conversation, The Inner Work of Racial Justice, and Things Are What You Make of Them.

Specific responsibilities include:    

  • Design innovative book covers and jackets that drive reader engagement —from concept through production  
  • Partner with art director, editors, and publishers to manage multiple book projects throughout the approval process 
  • Oversee deadline-driven workflows while maintaining exceptional quality across all deliverables   
  • Manage creative projects and timelines across staff and freelance contributors 
  • Prepare jacket/cover mechanicals - from creation (setting up templates, designing layout, and routing within deadlines) to final production (liaise with production mangers on materials and setup; color correcting before final proofing, and provide files to printer) 
  • Organize and archive final design assets for marketing and promotional use 

  

Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:    

  • 5 years design experience (publishing, media, or studio experience preferred) 
  • Highly creative and passionate about design and books 
  • Excellent design ability as demonstrated by an outstanding portfolio  
  • Broad knowledge of typography, illustration, and photography 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Strong attention to detail, quality and process.   
  • Agile project management skills with an ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.   
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively, with sensitivity and self- awareness, in large group settings 
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator

The Penguin Random House headquarters is located in New York, NY. This position follows a hybrid schedule, with the expectation of occasional in-office presence—typically around once per quarter—at our NYC office located at 1745 Broadway.

 

The salary for the Senior Director level is $73,500. The salary for the Associate Art Director is $85,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
