Production Editor, Penguin Publishing Group (Open to Remote)

Penguin Publishing Group seeks a production editor to join its team. Reporting to the executive director of production editorial, the production editor will oversee all aspects of the production cycle on an impressive list of nonfiction, fiction, business, personal development, history, literary, political texts, and more.

 

In the Penguin Publishing Group, the production editor will work closely with a roster of bestselling and award-winning imprints, including Viking, Pamela Dorman Books, Penguin Press, Portfolio, Sentinel, Riverhead, Penguin Books, Penguin Classics, and more. The Penguin Publishing Group encompasses titles that connect with all audiences—whether that is through global bestselling authors Leila Slimani and Amor Towles; Pulitzer Prize–winning nonfiction authors Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa; popular fiction titles like The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes; life-changing books such as The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk; or impactful motivational titles like Start with Why by Simon Sinek.

 

The production editor will work closely with the managing editorial, editorial, design, production, and digital production groups. From manuscript to bound book and ebook stages, they will be responsible for handling a variety of tasks and titles for originals and hardcover-to-paperback conversions, across many commercial genres.

 

We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who enjoys popular nonfiction and fiction. Our future colleague will be invested in bringing our books to a wide readership, has strong analytical skills, communicates clearly, and will be an active participant in a collaborative team. The ideal candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively and is comfortable asking for help when needed.

The Role:

  • Hires, for original and reprint titles, freelance copy editors and proofreaders and reviews their work, including clearing manuscripts, post-copyediting, and collating changes from authors and freelancers in page proofs. This work may consist of additional copyediting, fact-checking, and following up with queries to the editor/author and notes for the designer.
  • Reviews all phases of text from manuscript through blues
  • Styles manuscripts for design and typesetting
  • Copyedits and proofreads all stages of cover production, from cover copy to printers’ proofs
  • Reviews promotional and galley-related materials
  • Works in close conjunction with editorial, managing editorial, design, and production to create timelines and troubleshoot project-related concerns and issues
  • Keeps books on schedule and error free under tight deadlines
  • Performs quality assurance checks on ebooks

 

The Essentials:

  • Minimum of four years’ experience in a production editorial environment or equivalent editing and project management experience
  • Excellent copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Must be able to work and review work electronically using the track changes function in Microsoft Word and mark-up tools in Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, work well under pressure, and consistently meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality of content
  • Strong communication and writing skills

 

The salary range for this position is $63,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
