Director, Publicity, DK
DK, a globally-focused division of Penguin Random House, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Publicity Director to join their team. Reporting to the VP, Marketing and Publicity, DK US, the Publicity Director will oversee the division’s publicity staff, and will have responsibility for planning and implementing strategies for author promotions (including tours, reviews, media coverage, and long-lead pitching) for a wide array of titles including many of DK’s influencer-led, bestselling children’s and adult non-fiction books.
The Publicity Director will work closely with our authors and their agents, as well as editors and DK/PRH sales colleagues. The role is a key part of a highly creative and collaborative marketing and publicity team, and works closely with the DK UK marketing and PR team.

***This role will require the ability to be in to our NY office 8 times every 4 weeks.***
Specific responsibilities include:
- Managing and mentoring a creative and collaborative publicity team, including 2 direct reports.
- Strategizing, planning, and executing publicity campaigns that will maximize exposure for authors and their books.
- Securing national and regional TV, print, radio and online feature and review coverage for our authors.
- Plan and organize long-lead pitching to national contacts as well as book clubs (Oprah, Reese, GMA, and Read With Jenna/Today Show).
- Planning and booking extensive national multi-city book tours, with events in bookstores, libraries, community-reads programs, and other large speaking venues.
- Preparing title campaign budgets and tracking seasonal expense projections, as well as using data and analytics to adjust campaigns during pre-order periods.
- Collaborating closely with US imprint Alpha colleagues on long-term strategies for the group’s major authors, brands and series.
- Collaborating with outside PR agencies for select campaigns.
- Coaching and prepping talent for public presentations and media interviews.
- Accompanying authors to media interviews and events.
- Managing relationships with select book festivals and conferences throughout the year.
- Developing and maintaining strong, trusting relationships with authors and the media.
- Drafting compelling press materials and targeted pitches.
- Attending and presenting at weekly and seasonal sales and marketing meetings.

- Significant prior work experience in book publicity, minimum 10 years, with an emphasis placed on booking top-line media and author tours
- Experience planning and executing PR campaigns for high-profile authors; experience with influencers/content creators a plus
- Exceptional writing and pitching skills
- Management experience
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Existing relationships with national and regional media contacts across all mediums, festival organizers and bookstore event contacts.
- Experience presenting in front of large groups including internal meetings and with outside clients
- Proven ability to meet deadlines, multitask, and prioritize
- Strong organizational skills
- The ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also maintaining accuracy and attention to detail are essential
- Proficiency with publicity software, including Muck Rack and Cision
- Proficiency with analytical tools
- Ability to occasionally travel nationally to accompany authors on tours with potential for international travel
The salary range for this position is $92,000-$120,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
