Penguin Young Readers is seeking a Designer to join RISE x Penguin Workshop to create engaging, elegant, and empowering books. This role will focus on designing picture books and board books, for ages 0-5.


The Designer will work with passionate colleagues, expert authors, and masterful illustrators. The ideal candidate has overall vision, considers every detail of a project, and enjoys working collaboratively. In addition to design, this role will support the Art Director throughout the publishing process, from concept to printing, and beyond.


Some of our most popular titles include: Our Skin, Three Ways to Be Brave, and I Am!: Affirmations for Resilience.


Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the Art Director, with all aspects of book making, including but not limited to layout, text edits, proofing, routing, and developing typographic solutions
  • Design 10-15 books a year including picture-books, board books, reprints, and re-format editions
  • Find and pitch new artists
  • Take part in team meetings with the Editors and Art Director to brainstorm, review layouts, problem-solve, and strategize, as well as one-on-one meetings with the Art Director to review passes and send notes to authors and illustrators
  • Work collaboratively with editorial, production, copy-editing, and other inhouse departments
  • Communicate clearly and productively with artists and agents
  • Meet print deadlines
  • Package files, create final pdfs for printers and F&Gs
  • Fulfill image requests from other departments like publicity and marketing
  • Design and brainstorm for RISE Instagram account @risebooks



  • A deep interest in children's books, and their role in society
  • 3-5 years of experience in book publishing design or editorial design
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Illustrator)
  • A passion for illustration, fine art, and working with artists
  • A portfolio that showcases inventive design, typography and/or hand-lettering skills
  • Strong interpersonal / communication skills and a desire to work and learn collaboratively
  • Experience with PDF workflow and pre-press production
  • An organized, and meticulous approach to work
  • Consistent follow-up and follow-through, and the ability to time-manage and prioritize a multitude of tasks
  • A sense of purpose and comfort with activism / mission-driven work
  • Enjoys a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with / exposure to 0-5 year olds (from any side: teaching, babysitting, camp counseloring, parenting, aunt or uncling, etc.)
  • Drawing skills are a plus
  • Experience with contracts ideal
