Penguin Random House is seeking an experienced Editor to acquire, edit and develop a nonfiction list of around 5-8 titles a year for the Image imprint. The Editor will distinguish bestseller potential by identifying, cultivating, and publishing new authors, as well as help to build upon the success of current authors and titles. The role will be fully involved in the publishing process through production. This is an excellent opportunity to establish and nurture relationships with authors, booksellers, reviewers, and others in the writing and publishing community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act as the in-house liaison between editorial and the production, design, art, and managing editorial departments, as well as the sales, marketing and publicity teams
  • Solicit, read, evaluate and develop manuscripts and proposals for possible acquisition.
  • Manage acquired books through the process, and in doing so, collaborate with authors on changes in style, content and format of books
  • Create original and compelling cover copy for titles, catalogs and title information sheets
  • Establish and coordinate editorial/production schedules to ensure all projects are met in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition to publish date
  • Research and provide information and strategic recommendations to senior leadership team, with the goal of broadening the reach of the imprint
  • Read and report on submissions from agents, and form opinions to evaluate commercial and literary potential
  • Liase with Legal and Contracts department to draft, create, and negotiate contracts with authors and agents
  • Effectively represent own list as well as the Image imprint to media, booksellers, foreign publishers, literary organizations, and other out-of-house contacts beyond authors and agents


Please apply if you meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in publishing; experience in faith/inspiration publishing a plus
  • A thorough understanding of the overall publishing process and a firm understanding of the financial aspects of trade book publishing
  • Editorial expertise in both line editing and conceptual editing 
  • Self-motivated, hands-on, creative individual with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail in a deadline-driven environment with the ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Strong initiative and judgment
  • Results-oriented and ability to work well independently as well as in collaborative or team environments
  • Established contacts in the agent community
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to negotiate with authors and agents
  • Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work product and demonstrate good follow-up and follow-through
  • Drives change and innovation by improving work product or process, and challenges established norms where appropriate
  • Proven ability to build supportive and constructive relationships within and outside of the organization; takes the lead in inspiring others to work together for mutual benefit
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook
