Designer - Creative Marketing Services

Penguin Random House is seeking a Designer to join a fast-paced and innovative Creative Marketing Services team, working primarily on the Berkley imprint. The Designer will have the opportunity to create marketing materials on a wide array of genres and titles, including commercial fiction, historical fiction, romance, thriller, horror, true crime, and a healthy backlist of classics like Animal Farm, 1984, and The Godfather. Berkley leads the way in inclusive rom-coms, with a focus on publishing a diverse catalog of titles with fresh covers and perspectives that reflect our readership. Our extensive list of bestselling authors include Emily Henry, Jasmine Guillory, Jayne Ann Krentz, Nalini Singh, Mark Greaney, Frank Herbert, William Gibson, Christine Feehan, Charlaine Harris, Grady Hendrix, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Liane Moriarty. 

 

This role will work closely with marketers and art directors to brainstorm and create marketing, publicity, and promotional materials and will have opportunities to work on special team projects and conceive independent projects.

Specific responsibilities include: 

  1. Conceptualizing and designing digital and print ad campaigns as well as promotional materials, including but not limited to: social media images, cover animations/animated gifs and other short form videos, photos, original illustrations, e-cards, website assets, postcards, bookmarks, and galley back covers. 
  2. Tackling a high volume of rush projects for titles across the imprint
  3. Taking a leadership role within the team, serving as a mentor and point of contact for junior staff 
  4. Working closely with team leadership to refine designs and copy, incorporate feedback, and route work to internal departments. 
  5. Photo researching, as well as retouching and color correction of images. 
  6. Creating lifestyle images and product shots in Photoshop for social media and retailer feeds. 
  7. Designing presentations for sales conferences and author and agent meetings. 
  8. Keeping up to date on design trends and marketing news and participating in group brainstorms and discussions. 
  9. Submitting pixel-perfect, typo-free designs to traffickers, media partners, printers, and vendors. 

  

Please apply if you meet the following requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years' design experience as a staff designer or related freelance work  
  • Publishing experience not required, but must love books!   
  • Excellent design ability, including strong type design and layout, as demonstrated by a stellar portfolio  
  • Proven self-starter with strong task management skills and attention to detail 
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to communicate, problem solve creatively, and collaborate well with internal and external partners, incorporating various stakeholders’ feedback under tight deadlines 
  • Ability to create across a wide range of aesthetics, audiences, and project types  
  • Flexible, inquisitive, and eager to learn 
  • Experience with color correction, color theory, retouching, and preparing files for output,  
  • both digital and print 
  • Highly proficient in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects, and Premiere 
  • Photography skills and knowledge of social media a plus 
  • Knowledge of HTML, HTML5, Google Web Designer, and Adobe Dreamweaver a plus 
  • Illustration ability a plus
