Penguin Random House has a wonderful opportunity for an Assistant Managing Editor to join Vintage Books and Anchor Books, imprints of Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Dedicated to releasing Knopf Doubeday’s award-wining and best-selling titles in paperback, Vintage/Anchor is an industry-leading paperback publisher, with a roster of authors that includes Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Margaret Atwood, James Baldwin, Dan Brown, Paulo Coelho, Dave Eggers, Kazuo Ishiguro, Jhumpa Lahiri, Stieg Larsson, Cormac McCarthy, Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, Haruki Murakami, Richard Russo, Cheryl Strayed, and Colson Whitehead, among many others. Vintage and Anchor also publish a select list of paperback originals, and in 2022 will launch a line of hardcovers under the Anchor Books imprint.

 

We are looking for a creative problem solver who is comfortable collaborating with various internal departments while managing a busy workload in a fast-paced environment and report into the Managing Editor. The Assistant Managing Editor working with the Vintage Books and Anchor Books imprints, which publish approximately 225 paperback titles per year.

 

The Role:

  • Working closely with the Managing Editor in setting up new titles for production and maintaining publishing schedules
  • Handling print and ebook corrections and reconversions
  • Resolves problems independently through discussions with Editors, Copy Editors, Designers, and production staff
  • Working as Production Editor on 65 –75 paperback reprints annually
  • Creating back ads and bound galley materials
  • Supporting the Managing Editor to keep a track of cover approvals
  • Reviews manuscript tagging for consistency, clarity, and accuracy

 

The Essentials:

  • Qualified candidates must have a minimum of three years of trade book managing editorial experience 
  • Expert proofreading skills
  • Ability to work independently and quickly, unflustered by interruption
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to organize and prioritize workload to accommodate shifting schedules and deadlines
  • Ability to help others navigate challenging deadlines, assist with their work as needed
  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong technological skills, especially editing in Microsoft Word; Excel a plus
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong ability to multitask and manage multiple projects under tight or shifting deadlines
  • SAP knowledge a plus
