Assistant Manager, Inventory - Publishing Operations

At Penguin Random House, we have an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about books to make an impact by helping to get award-winning products into the marketplace as an Assistant Inventory Manager!


Under the direction of the Director of Inventory Management, you’ll work primarily on backlist titles, maintaining overall inventory levels to company targets of order fill rate, inventory turn and obsolescence rates. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with just about every department in publishing, including sales, editorial, marketing, warehouse, publicity, and more!


Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Recommending/ordering backlist reprints as required
  • Monitoring inventory on backlist titles, along with sales trends, and initiating reprint discussions for regularly scheduled reprint meetings
  • Reviewing reprints on order and working with Production to adjust the due dates as needed (either earlier or later, depending upon changes in sales pattern)
  • Signed edition coordination from Initial Production to Warehouse
  • Assisting with seasonal remainder and overstock lists for review with publisher
  • Maintaining prices, sales status, returns disposition and other status’ within SAP
  • Reviewing settings for digitally printed titles to adjust for changes in sales pattern (i.e.: minimum order quantity and reorder point) as well as changing the digital print platform as necessary
  • Assisting with review for disposition of excess component inventory being stored at printers
  • Working with warehouse personnel (including Stock Control and Customer Service)
  • Tracking late initial titles with Production and communicate to Warehouse
  • Quality Issue coordination
  • Initial planned order updates
  • Backlist boxset packups/slipcase orders
  • Coordinating backlist special handling (stickering etc)
  • Covering Manager when out of office
  • Special projects as needed



  • 2-3 years of book publishing experience
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Ability to successfully prioritize and work on multiple projects at a time
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
