Associate Sales Manager/Sales Manager, International Sales, Penguin Random House (Hybrid)

The Sales Department at Penguin Random House seeks an Associate Sales Manager/Sales Manager to join our International Sales team. Working closely with the UK-Based Associate Sales Director, this highly visible and fast-paced role is responsible for developing and implementing sales strategies and setting sales priorities while managing our business relationships with our distributors - Penguin Random House India and Penguin Random House Australia.

 

The Associate Sales Manager or Manager will work closely with our New York office and UK-based team to provide relevant sales and market information and represent our lists to accounts and distributors in India, Australia and New Zealand. Focusing on timely communication of title metadata, priorities and local print needs, this position will help us continue providing speed-to-market, product knowledge and assist in providing stability and professionalism in an ever-changing market.

 

Our ideal candidate has international account management experience in publishing, is highly motivated, enthusiastic about publishing, and enjoys reading broadly and often. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who loves books of all types and is invested in the process of bringing them to a wide readership, has strong writing skills, communicates clearly, is comfortable asking for help when needed, wants to be an active participant on a collaborative team, and can handle the details of immediately urgent tasks but also remember to step back, consider the big picture, and adjust strategy when needed. Export/ international sales experience for US Houses is required for the Manager level.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the Sales Associate in maintaining a timely flow of title information to our distributors, including local on sale dates, retail prices, and formats
  • Collaborating with Penguin Random House (Client) Publisher Services and a range of client publishers including DC Comics, Disney, Marvel, MIT Press and Seven Seas, to maximize title performance in the territory
  • Liaising with Penguin Random House Sub-rights Managers on territory title rights
  • Seeking out and initiating plans to secure new sales opportunities
  • Working with the International Publicity and Marketing team to ensure books are available to support publicity and marketing outreach as well as author events
  • Traveling to Australia and India one to two times per year
  • Attending meetings with internal and external colleagues in the New York offices
  • Reporting weekly to the Assoc. Sales Director on sales performance and goals
  • Attending sales conferences and book fairs (Frankfurt and London) when necessary

  • Minimum of 3 years of book publishing sales experience; prior related international/export sales experience required to be considered at the Manager level
  • Experience managing international accounts is preferred
  • Knowledge of non-trade/special markets, evolving trends, and retail merchandising are preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Collaborative attitude and an ability to work on complex problems as part of a team
  • Highly organized with the ability to self-start and prioritize a heavy workload
  • Ability to attend meetings as needed with internal and external colleagues in the NYC office with minimal notice
  • Ability to travel internationally for 2-4 weeks per year
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

The salary for an Associate Sales Manager is $66,500 and Sales Manager is $73,500. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. 

 

This hybrid position has occasional in-office responsibilities, including but not limited to in-office meetings, client publisher visits, and ad hoc administrative projects. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
