Assistant Editor, Random House Children's Books - (Hybrid)

The Assistant Editor will support the growth and development of the Dr. Seuss Publishing business by maintaining the program’s extensive backlist and collaborating with the team on other editorial projects. This position will be joining a small and fast-paced team, reporting to the Executive Editor of Dr. Seuss Publishing. 

 

As Assistant Editor, you will have the unique opportunity to build on a storied children’s brand and work with Dr. Seuss’s beloved characters like the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, Horton the Elephant, Sam-I-Am, and more.  

  

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Responsible for overseeing and managing the 89-year old Dr. Seuss and Beginner Books backlist to keep our covers, texts, and metadata relevant to today’s consumers. 
  • Coordinate with Editorial, Design, Inventory, Sales, and Publishing Office to submit reprint corrections, track status of corrections and approvals, monitor production schedules, write cover copy. 
  • Collaborate with the Digital Strategy team to maintain and update web copy and metadata, optimize search, and respond to market trends and needs.  
  • Edit backlist format conversions and new omnibus editions for both Dr. Seuss books and Beginner Books, including preparing cover memos and title information sheets; presenting at seasonal meetings; and writing cover copy and web copy. 
  • Support frontlist editorial projects as needed, such as proprietary titles and other new books. 
  • Assist with special research projects, including market analyses, category studies, and running sales reports. 
  • Manage external communication with partners, estates, and other key stakeholders.  
  • Organize recurring approval meetings, including manage agendas, distribute materials, take notes, and oversee internal tracking system. 
  • Provide admin support for the Dr. Seuss Publishing team, including creating PowerPoints for seasonal launch meetings and quarterly business reviews, ordering contractual copies for licensors and creators, tracking deadlines, organizing meetings, and support on paperwork for frontlist titles. 

 

Requirements: 

 

  • At least 2 years in trade book publishing. Experience in Managing Editorial or Publishing Operations is a plus. 
  • Strong interest in brand building 
  • Exceptional attention to detail, strong ability to prioritize, and deadline driven 
  • Excellent organizational and follow-up skills with the ability to multitask  
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal & written   
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook  
  • Experience in children’s publishing and/or licensed publishing preferred  
  • Spanish-language is a plus 

 

 The salary for this position is $53,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
