Sr Editor, Hogarth - (Hybrid)
Hogarth, an imprint of Random House, seeks a Senior Editor to join our editorial team. The Senior Editor will acquire, edit, and publish 6-8 books a year that fit our editorial mission of literary excellence, reporting to Hogarth’s Vice President and Editor in Chief.
The Senior Editor will be a central member of Hogarth’s editorial department, playing an essential role in the imprint’s growth. They will be fully engaged in the entire publishing process of their list, from submissions and acquisitions, through manuscript editing, and onto publication and beyond. The Senior Editor will collaborate openly with the Hogarth editorial and publishing teams, as well as our colleagues throughout the Random House Publishing Group, ensuring each book’s successful journey from acquisition to the reader. The Senior Editor will have a history of successfully acquiring, editing, and publishing a range of titles at a literary imprint. The ideal candidate will have experience in at least two of our three core categories: literary fiction, literary nonfiction, and literature in translation.
Named in honor of Virginia and Leonard Woolf’s Hogarth Press, today’s Hogarth publishes fiction, nonfiction, and literature in translation by writers of exceptional talent who are deeply engaged with the world, with an emphasis on innovative and international voices. Our authors have won the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the Booker Prize, the National Book Award, and include Han Kang, Joyce Carol Oates, Kiran Desai, Javier Zamora, Mariana Enriquez, Vinson Cunningham, Angie Kim, and more.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Efficiently evaluate submissions, identifying potential acquisitions and presenting clear, persuasive arguments for a book’s literary merits and marketplace potential, with the goal of acquiring and publishing 6-8 books a year
- Rigorously edit manuscripts in every way, including developmental, structural, and line-editing, working closely with authors and agents to ensure the best version of each book
- Develop and nurture relationships with leading literary agents and authors
- Effectively serve as each book’s primary advocate both within the house and outside
- Steer each title through the publication process, including: running p&ls, navigating auctions and deals, writing copy, seeking blurbs, shaping a book’s messaging and jacket design, and responding to requests from the publicity, marketing, and sales departments, all with the goal of publishing each book as robustly as possible
- Collaborate enthusiastically with the Hogarth editorial team, contributing to the imprint’s overall editorial strategy, including reading with other editors as they assess projects, as needed
- Ensure each book meets every deadline on the road to publication
- Collaborate openly with colleagues in the other imprints and departments of the Random House Publishing Group
- Develop and nurture relationships with stakeholders in the literary world, such as booksellers, librarians, media and social media figures, as well as our colleagues across the relevant divisions of Penguin Random House
- Represent Hogarth and our books both within PRH and in the larger world
Preferred qualifications include:
- At least 5 years of experience editing and publishing critically acclaimed and profitable literary fiction, non-fiction, and/or translations
- Superb editing capabilities and experience, including working closely with authors on every element of a manuscript’s development
- A track record of acquiring notable books from leading literary agents
- Deep enthusiasm for literary fiction, nonfiction, and international writers, and a strong understanding of current and past authors and trends, with an ability to place a new book into the broader literary landscape
- Outstanding writing skills, especially for editorial memos, copy, and internal and external communications
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to position books clearly and persuasively
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate with authors and agents
- A collaborative spirit and openness to working with others at every step of the publication process
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively and manage time
- Creative problem solving and decision making
- Careful attention to detail and timely follow-up, both internally and externally
- Ability to work both independently and with a team
- A creative outlook and sensibility, with a deep curiosity about the world of culture and ideas
- A rich and growing network among literary stakeholders, including writers, agents, publishing colleagues, booksellers, librarians, media and social media influencers, international editors and publishers, and beyond
This position is a hybrid role.
The salary range for this position is $81,500 - $83,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
