Leaving Readers Better Than We Found Them

At Random House Canada, we are a team of dedicated book-loving professionals committed to discovering, shaping, and sharing content that nurtures thoughts, dreams, and conversations globally. We ensure both new and established voices are heard, exploring potential, impacting Canada’s cultural narrative, and pushing the edges of creativity.

We champion diverse stories and fresh perspectives, amplifying under-represented voices, embracing emerging trends, and exploring pressing issues in Canada and worldwide. Our books range from powerful narrative non-fiction to boundary-pushing fiction, focusing on high-profile authors and strong women's voices.

Within the editorial department, we guide our authors' journeys, empowering them to unleash their creative spirit and pursue their passions fearlessly. Whether working with legendary voices like Chris Hadfield and Jann Arden or discovering rising stars, we support and connect our authors' stories to diverse readers worldwide because great stories deserve to be read.

We are looking for an Editor to join the publishing team at Random House Canada (12-month contract).

We are seeking an Editor with a focus on both fiction and non-fiction to join our team for a 12-month contract to cover a parental leave and help us achieve our mission of leaving readers better than we found them. Are you a curious, revolutionary thinker, passionate about creating and daring to imagine? Do you read widely across genres, particularly in the commercial space? Are you intrinsically motivated, collaborative, and possess a growth mindset? Do you thrive in a fast-paced team environment and strive for ongoing personal evolution? If this describes you, we encourage you to apply.

Your Contribution to the story:

Reporting to the Publisher, you will work with leading thinkers and writers across genres such as romance, fantasy, historical fiction, pop culture, and memoir. Our editorial team is committed to evolving and stretching in new directions while continuing to be home to strong, award-winning Canadian and international voices writing about issues that reflect the world around us. Editors work directly with our Random House Canada Publisher and collaborate with fellow editors and multiple other departments to achieve creative integrity, execute to a high standard and deliver outstanding books.

What you’ll do:

  • Edit assigned manuscripts and guide them through development, copyediting, design, legal review, and production.
  • Collaborate with sales, marketing, publicity, and other teams to develop book strategy, positioning, copy, and design.
  • Maintain strong relationships with authors, literary agents, and industry colleagues.
  • Assess the viability and market opportunity of fiction and non-fiction submissions, and create pitches to garner internal support.
  • Represent Random House Canada at book launches and industry events.

Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications):

  • 5+ years of direct editorial experience with a track record of acquiring and shaping successful fiction and non-fiction.
  • Commitment to championing books across stakeholders.
  • Ensure books meet high standards: culturally aware, creatively exceptional, and engaging.
  • Attentiveness to emerging book trends.
  • Solid negotiation skills and business understanding.
  • Impeccable copyediting and proofreading skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • An inclusive approach, supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
  • Enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
  • And of course, a deep passion for books.

We believe in amplifying diverse voices and are actively seeking team members from marginalized and underrepresented communities. If you self-identify as Black, as Indigenous, as a person of colour, as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, or another marginalized group, we strongly encourage you to apply.
