Sustainability Manager, Publishing Operations (Open to Remote)

We are seeking a Sustainability Manager to be at the nexus of that effort, coordinating sustainability strategy, policies, and initiatives for all Penguin Random House territories, worldwide. Reporting into the VP/Executive Director of Production Planning, Analytics, & Paper Purchasing, the successful candidate with work closely with a cross-divisional team of international supply chain experts throughout Penguin Random House, our print and paper suppliers, and external stakeholders to ensure that the company's books and operations reflect its commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable sourcing. The Sustainability Manager will oversee the measurement, reporting, and communication of the company's environmental performance and progress toward Carbon Neutrality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the execution of Penguin Random House’s global sustainability goals including Carbon Neutrality by 2030
  • Monitor key performance indicators and targets for sustainability across the company's business units and functions.
  • Coordinate and support the implementation of sustainability initiatives and best practices across all Penguin Random House territories.
  • Inform and educate business on environmental related governmental regulations related to wood products, paper, etc. and help to ensure compliance.  (i.e. EU Deforestation Regulation)
  • Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers, customers, NGOs, and industry associations, learn best practices in order to advance the company's sustainability agenda and reputation.
  • Coordinate carbon data collection process and help to ensure the accuracy of carbon data in our proprietary environmental data management system across all Penguin Random House territories.
  • Prepare sustainability reports and certifications, in accordance with relevant standards and frameworks.
  • Provide thought leadership and advocacy on sustainability issues and trends, and represent the company at relevant events and forums.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 3-5 years of experience in sustainability management, preferably in the publishing or media industry.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in sustainability, environmental studies, or related field.
  • Proven track record of managing sustainability strategies and initiatives that deliver positive environmental outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability protocols, standards and frameworks, such as GHG, SBTi, SEPI, ISO, etc.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and influencing skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
  • Proficient in MS Excel with the ability to manipulate complex data.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.


The salary range for this position is $80,000-$95,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.

The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
