Penguin Random House is seeking a Designer to join the Penguin Press art department. In this role, you will be responsible for assisting in the design of hardcover jackets and paperback covers. The Designer will work closely the art director and design staff in the preparation and routing mechanicals, and readying them for printing
purposes. This position will also coordinate with the editorial, managing editorial, and production departments in order to facilitate this process.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Designing and routing jacket and cover mechanicals (layout design), and seeing through to production stage
  • Designing original covers and jackets
  • Preparing files, reviewing and correcting proofs with the assistance of senior staff
  • Making reprint corrections
  • Converting hardcover designs to paperback format
  • Fielding interdepartmental requests
  • Communicating with editors, production editors, freelancers, and external departments
     

With this in mind, to be successful in this role we feel that you’ll need to have:

  • 1-3 years of professional design experience
  • Genuine interest in book cover design
  • Strong skillset in design and typography
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat) on Mac platform
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively (verbal/written)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Experience preparing files for digital and print output
  • Retouching and color correcting skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
