Cloud Platform Engineer (FTC until September 2026)

We are recruiting a Cloud Platform Engineer to join our growing Technology team on a fixed term contract basis until September 2026. This role is offered on a hybrid basis from our Embassy Gardens office in London.

 

This is an exciting time to join the Penguin Random House UK Cloud Platforms team as we embark on a significant migration and transformation programme, including the migration of our on premise SAP ECC system to SAP Hana in Azure. Reporting into the Cloud Platforms Engineering Manager, the Cloud Platform Engineer will work in collaboration with the team to develop, implement, optimise, migrate to, and maintain cloud-based solutions for Penguin Random House. You’ll embrace DevOps and understand the benefits of repeatable patterns, automation and self-service capabilities.

 

The Cloud Platform Engineer will bring extensive experience of designing and operating workloads in Microsoft Azure, deployed using Infrastructure as Code, and will be comfortable developing and reviewing artifacts written in collaboration with business and project teams. You will own the design and refinement pipeline patterns using GitLab (or similar) and will promote the benefits and best practices for DevSecOps.

The role

Key responsibilities: 

 

  • Develop and support our Azure Landing Zone and centrally managed services. 
  • Design new and enhance existing patterns for cloud products and services within the enterprise service catalogue. 
  • Support the migration of mainly windows based workloads to Azure. 
  • Participate in knowledge sharing sessions for internal customers and conferences. 
  • Build artifacts which support the entire lifecycle of a cloud product (IaC, config management, serverless applications, remediations etc) 
  • Design GitLab pipelines for promoting agile working patterns in Dev and UAT, and automated deployments with security guardrails and remediations into production. 
  • Understand the benefits and use-cases for IaaS, Paas, SaaS etc. when working with the business to develop new cloud products and services. 
  • Work alongside business partners across identity management, infrastructure, security to integrate capabilities for use across the portfolio (such as unified authentication and interoperability with on-prem services). 
  • Ensure public cloud services adhere to best practice frameworks including the Azure Well-Architected Framework. 
  • Stay up to date with developments in emerging cloud platform trends and innovations to support the deployment of emerging services into our customer environments. 
  • Work closely with the application delivery teams to seek continual service improvement opportunities.

 

What you’ll bring 

   

Essential technical criteria: 

 

Experience in the following technology domains across a multi-national organisation: 

  • Deploying and managing infrastructure hosting SAP Hana systems in Azure.
  • Strong knowledge of operating Windows & Linux (SUSE) infrastructures and experience migrating workloads to Azure.  
  • Demonstrable experience writing code artifacts in at least two of the following languages: 

- Python 

- YAML/JSON 

- Terraform and Packer (HCL) 

- PowerShell 

- JavaScript 

  • Experience designing and managing pipelines (CI/CD) and automation using Terraform, Ansible and GitLab. 
  • Experience designing solutions that are aligned with the Azure Well-Architected Framework. 
  • Experience designing and implementing networking components (VNets, Network Security Groups, Route Tables, VPNs, Firewalls). 
  • Working in an Agile team and a clear understand of the Scrum cycle. 

 

Desirable criteria: 

  • Experience with observability capability and logging/monitoring. 
  • Experience operating containerised workloads (Docker, ACS, AKS, ACI). 
  • Experience operating Azure Data Factory / Azure Integration Services.

Salary

 

The salary band for this opportunity is £70,000-£80,000, depending on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus a generous bonus scheme and benefits.  

 

Hybrid working

 

While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role we expect that you will work from the Embassy Gardens office in London 2 days per week (typically Tuesday & Wednesday or Thursday).
