Associate Director, Cloud Automation Architecture

Penguin Random House is looking for an Associate Director, Cloud Automation Architecture with experience managing a team that supports various high-volume applications. The candidate should be adept at managing infrastructure, applications, and automation related to application hosting in collaboration with development teams.



  • Prioritize team and individual workloads
  • Create and improve CI/CD pipelines
  • Evaluate and advise on system and application architectures
  • Collaborate with information security team to determine best practices for standard implementation
  • Assist with security mitigation efforts
  • Forecast system capacity requirements and make suggestions accordingly
  • Help define and maintain software and system standards
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and triage production problems as they occur
  • Assist with operational monitoring definitions and automatic remediation where feasible
  • Function as DevOps Liaison: translating developer and business desires into operational requirements
  • Lead application design efforts
  • ‘Tier 3’ troubleshooting as needed 
  • Assist with disaster recovery testing


Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • Systems analysis and design experience
  • Comfortable with large scale production systems and technologies
  • Web application development experience (Java, PHP, Python, etc.)
  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices
  • Familiarity with application performance monitoring tools (i.e., New Relic, Dynatrace)
  • Well-versed in GIT usage and best practices (Gitlab / GitHub)


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong oral/written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker, ECS, Kubernetes
  • Understanding of load balancing technologies (F5, ELB)
  • Strong Unix/Linux proficiency
  • Systems automation experience with Java (Maven, Ant)
  • Understanding of object-oriented software and design patterns
  • Experience with modern front-end technologies such as SCSS, Bower, NPM, Webpack, Aurelia/React/Angular
  • Experience with AWS services such as: EC2, ELB, Lambda, RDS, S3, ECS
  • Comfortable working in all layers of the networking stack
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools
  • Knowledge of relational and non-relational databases
  • Experience supporting LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) and LEMP (Linux, Nginx, MySQL, PHP) stacks for web content delivery
  • Experience supporting various CMS platforms (WordPress)
  • Experience with identity and access management solutions (Okta, NetIQ)
