
Penguin Young Readers is seeking a Senior Designer who thrives in a fast-paced, creative, and diverse work environment. This is an exciting opportunity to create eye-catching covers for a wide range of fiction and non-fiction titles, for Middle Grade, Young Adult, and adult readers.
The Senior Designer will have the opportunity to make jackets, covers, and components for a variety of imprints at Penguin Young Readers. Our list of renowned authors includes Jacqueline Woodson, Sabaa Tahir, Ruta Sepetys, S.E. Hinton, Jandy Nelson, Krystal Sutherland, John Green, and Roald Dahl.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Handle every stage of the jacket and cover design process from concept to production.
- Commission established and up-and-coming illustrators, photographers, and creatives.
- Develop in-house artwork for jackets, covers, and components (including endpaper and decorative edge art)
- Collaborate with all members of the design, editorial, production, and in-house creative teams.
- Prepare press-ready files, color-correct, and approve printed proofs.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize across multiple projects.
- Adhere to fast-paced production schedules and meet deadlines.
- Remain current on art and design trends, both in the publishing industry and across popular culture.
- Actively seek out and collaborate with new, talented illustrators

- An eclectic portfolio that highlights your conceptual thinking and your ability to design covers across all ages and genres.
- Experience finding, hiring, collaborating with, and art directing illustrators.
- Digital photo-illustration (image compositing) ability is a must.
- Meticulous typography and composition skills.
- Illustration background is a plus.
- Hand-lettering skills is a plus.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Pre-press and color printing knowledge.
- A passion for both collaboration and independent creative problem-solving.
- Ability to be resourceful, nimble, and responsive to an evolving market.
- Solid organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in publishing book design.
The salary range for this position is $73,500 to 74,500. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
