Publicity Assistant, Avery & Tarcher (Hybrid)

We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic Publicity Assistant to support the Director of Publicity and the Assistant Director of Publicity across both imprints. This is an exciting opportunity for someone eager to build a career in nonfiction book publicity and gain hands-on experience working on impactful, conversation-driving books.

Specific responsibilities include:   

 

The Publicity Assistant plays a vital role in supporting both the department’s overall operations and individual title campaigns.

 

Departmental & Administrative Support (Director of Publicity)

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support to the Director of Publicity
  • Light meeting support (schedule meetings, coordinate internal and external calls, take notes)
  • Process invoices, billing, expense reports, and departmental paperwork in partnership with the Director and procedures via Accounts Payable. Track budgets and maintain organized records of departmental expenses
  • Maintain and update the publicity database, including media contacts and campaign records
  • Spearhead award submissions for the department. This will be in partnership with the Director and another publicist on the team.
  • Assist with preparation for seasonal pitch meetings gathering catalog materials as needed
  • Support special projects and cross-departmental initiatives as needed

 

Campaign Support (Assistant Director of Publicity)

  • Provide hands-on support for publicity campaigns across lead and select titles
  • Draft press materials including press releases, pitch letters, media alerts, and talking points
  • Build and maintain targeted media lists (national, regional, broadcast, podcast, digital, etc.)
  • Research new media outlets, emerging platforms, and unique promotional opportunities
  • Coordinate galley and finished book mailings
  • Track and digitally circulate media coverage; maintain detailed campaign logs
  • Support the Assistant Director with coordinating author events and signings
  • Arrange author travel and accommodations; create and distribute detailed tour schedules
  • Attend pitch meetings and author calls; contribute ideas for creative outreach
  • Pitch select media under the guidance of supervisors
  • Monitor media trends, news cycles, and cultural conversations to identify timely hooks

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Professional, proactive, and resourceful mindset
  • Comfortable interacting with authors, agents, media, and internal stakeholders
  • Familiarity with media landscapes (print, digital, broadcast, podcasts, newsletters, influencers)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

 

A plus but not required:

  • Experience with media databases (e.g., Cision, Muck Rack)
  • Familiarity with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or basic design tools
  • Prior internship or work experience in publishing, media, marketing, or communications

 

The Penguin Random House national headquarters is located in New York City.  This is a hybrid position, requiring approximately two days per week at our 1745 Broadway location.

 

The salary or salary range for this position is $51,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
