Vice President, Strategy (Onsite)

The Penguin Random House Strategy team is a fast-paced, collaborative team with a wide range of international experience across Publishing, Business Development, and Consulting. We work directly with the CEO and partner with teams across PRH in central departments, publishing divisions, and international territories to ideate, develop and implement strategic priorities to drive growth and impact. Our scope is an ever-evolving mix of topics at the center of Publishing.  

 

The VP will partner with the Chief Strategy Officer to help identify and drive strategic initiatives across Penguin Random House’s global portfolio in response to evolving industry trends, consumer behaviors, and technological innovation. You will adopt a variety of roles across projects (e.g. architect, project manager, researcher, storyteller, executor). This role is ideal for a strategic, creative thinker who thrives in a fast-paced collaborative environment, has a deep understanding of the publishing landscape and a proven track record of driving to results. 

 

Specific responsibilities include:   

  • Strategic planning & opportunity identification: Work closely with CSO and CEO to identify and prioritize strategic initiatives, develop clear implementation plans, and drive their execution.  
  • Core business: Partner with Publishing, Sales, and Operations to drive strategic growth initiatives, translating ideas into actionable strategies and roadmaps.
  • Market intelligence: Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscapes to inform strategy and maintain a forward-looking approach.
  • Business development: Evaluate and incubate new business /content monetization models and partnerships liaising between key stakeholders across Sales and Legal
  • New technologies: Work closely with executive team across Strategy, Legal, Operations to develop and implement strategic initiatives around AI
  • Entrepreneurs support: Collaborate with entrepreneurs of newly acquired businesses, PRH sister companies and key partners across Finance, M&A, Legal on strategic planning and value creation initiatives 
    • Work collaboratively to understand the unique needs of new partners and sister companies and how best to drive realization of opportunities within PRH
    • Serve as creative thinking partner for entrepreneurs to explore new ways of growth
    • Make concrete recommendations to underlying strategic initiatives that will create benefit across companies
    • Build and facilitate relationships between entrepreneurs and leadership across our 11 businesses 
    • Steer infrastructure for regularly interacting with portfolio of 5-10 key companies a year, ensuring realization of strategic initiatives
    • Learn best-practices and novel approaches and bring those into the larger organization to build new capabilities within PRH 

 

Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:   

  • Experienced Professional: 10+ years of experience in strategy, corporate development, or consulting, preferably in media, consumer, or technology sectors; Master’s degree strongly preferred 
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with comfort navigating ambiguity. Able to find structure, logic, and insight in ambiguous or complex business topics and provide meaningful conclusions and compelling, synthesized recommendations. 
  • High cultural EQ and collaborative mindset with proven track record of marshaling teams across creative, commercial, and operational areas to achieve outcomes 
  • Interest in emerging technologies and areas of Publishing, including generative AI and digital publishing platforms 
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and self-motivated team player  
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and under pressure to multi-task and prioritize to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment   
  • Project management: Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex projects and initiatives from inception to completion 
  • Story-telling skills: Ability to summarize and visualize information and create compelling storylines tailored to different audiences  
  • Analytical basis and data-savviness: Strong analytical skills and ability to understand and utilize data insights for strategic decision-making to develop actionable strategies and recommendations 
  • Passion for books 
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills 
  • Proficient Microsoft Office user, particularly with PPT, Excel, and Word 
  • Must be fluent in English (written and verbal) 

 

This is an onsite position based in our New York City office at 1745 Broadway, requiring up to five days per week in person. 

 

The total compensation range for this role is $190,000–$230,000, inclusive of annual bonuses.
