Penguin Random House is seeking a Senior Managing Editor to coordinate and monitor the production process of front list titles from the manuscript stage to the finished book for the Portfolio and Sentinel imprints. Handling approximately 60 titles per year, this role will disseminate up-to-date information regarding schedules, on-sale dates, and pricing. The ideal candidate will be service oriented, have excellent communication skills, be highly organized, and a creative problem solver who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Collaborating with the production team and copyeditors to set book schedules, approving book materials which include jacket copy, sample pages, and manuscript transmittals, routing pricing for approval, managing unpublished inventory, and providing support to all departments throughout the book production process to ensure deadlines are met.
  2. Setting up and maintaining title information in SAP.
  3. Coordinating the orders of bound galleys for editorial, marketing, publicity, and sales.
  4. Working closely with marketing to ensure that metadata is ready to be released to accounts within industry desired timeframe.
  5. Liaising between editorial and legal departments regarding the legal vetting of manuscripts.
  6. Conducting weekly production status meetings with editorial, production, and copyediting.
  7. Establishing and maintaining interdepartmental relationships to help achieve departmental and corporate goals.
  8. Co-supervising a Managing Editorial Assistant.

  • Minimum of 8 years of publishing experience; experience in managing editorial, production, or production editorial a plus
  • Excellent communication skills, including a strong ability to interact with employees across various departments
  • Superb organizational and time management skills
  • Outstanding ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline driven environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of SAP and FileMaker Pro a plus
