
The Data Science team at Penguin Random House is seeking an experienced machine learning scientist to drive a suite of e-book forecasting and pricing products. You will own the end-to-end design, implementation and long-term growth of products that deliver major impact for the business. You will inherit an existing system and have autonomy to decide what to support, what to expand and what to revamp. You will join a tight-knit group of world-class scientists delivering predictive solutions across a wide berth of functions at the company, including pricing, supply chain and operations, sales, marketing and ecommerce/personalization.
The ideal candidate will be an expert in modern forecasting techniques (such as Bayesian methods) and an accomplished software developer.

This role may be filled at the Senior or Staff level depending on experience and interview performance.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Take ownership. Be the in-house expert on our automated e-book pricing systems.
- Be ambitious. Shape long term plans for our e-book pricing systems and implement them.
- Be curious. Discover and build new techniques to improve coverage, accuracy and risk mitigation.
- Be a leader. Set a high bar for our team while helping them achieve their best.
- Be a team player. Collaborate with our scientists, particularly our print book pricing team.
- Be cutting edge. Use the latest AI tools to develop well-designed and robust software
Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:
- Masters with 8+ years OR PhD with 3+ years of applied work experience in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics or a related quantitative field
- Expertise in Bayesian statistical methods
- Experience using AI to speed development through exploration, questioning and testing
- Experience operating and maintaining automated machine learning systems
- Expertise in algorithm and model development, validation and maintenance for large-scale applications in commercial settings
- Proficiency with both Python and R
- Experience distilling stakeholder requirements into problem definitions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience building stochastic time series models
- Demonstrated ability to adopt existing systems and grow or migrate them
- Passionate about both books and market dynamics

The salary range for this position is $160,000 - $210,000. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
