Job Description


The Senior Interior Design Director is an experienced creative and operational leader responsible for setting the vision, standards, and execution of interior design across multiple publishing imprints: Berkley, Dutton, Putnam, Tarcher, Avery, Tiny Rep, and Plume. This role oversees a high-volume publishing program of approximately 600+ 1 color and 4 color titles per year while directly managing a team of 11 designers and associate design directors. As a working manager, the Senior Director balances leadership responsibilities with an active design workload. 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead, and mentor a team of designers and associate design directors, fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment 
  • Allocate and balance workload across the team, ensuring efficiency and sustainable pacing 
  • Review, guide, and approve design work, ensuring alignment with imprint identity and market positioning 
  • Partner with publishers, editors, and authors to shape and execute creative vision 
  • Serve as the primary design liaison to Editorial, Production, Production Editorial, Managing Editorial, and external partners 
  • Collaborate and lead on workflow improvements, art processes, and production efficiencies 
  • Manage freelance and external vendor relationships 
  • Responsible for designing approximately 30 titles 

Qualifications


  • 10+ years as book designer (or similar) with experience in managing imprints and high volume 
  • Experience supervising and art directing a design teams with 6+ staff.  
  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). 
  • Solid understanding of typography, layout, color theory. 
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent knowledge of prepress and print reproduction. 

Additional Information


This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities (approximately 3 days a week). We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, and NY). 

The salary range for this position is $115,000 -$140,000.  All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
