We are seeking an Assistant to provide support to the SVP, Publisher and Assistant Director, Publishing of Dutton, Putnam, Berkley, and Plume. The Assistant will gain comprehensive experience on the business side of publishing while working with a wide range of bestselling commercial fiction and non-fiction titles. This is a unique opportunity to learn about publishing from a big picture standpoint and to engage with many departments on a daily basis.

Specifically, the Publishing Assistant:

  1. Provides administrative support (answers phone, takes messages, and disseminates information)
  2. Manages calendars including coordinating meeting requests, scheduling meetings, and booking meeting rooms
  3. Researches and prepares sales, marketing, and editorial reports and compiles consumer analytics
  4. Prepares for meetings or presentations (runs reports, creates slides, gathers information, etc.)
  5. Liaises with agents, authors, media and industry contacts, as well as high-level colleagues in-house across many departments
  6. Assists with various special projects as needed and as interested

  • Prior office/administrative experience
  • Proven ability to work independently and proactively and handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel
  • Genuine interest in book publishing
