The position reports to the publisher of Kathy Dawson Books and the Associate Publisher of Dial Books for Young Readers, providing administrative and editorial support while coordinating between authors, agents, and different departments within the division. The ideal candidate is an ambitious self-starter who is both creative and detail-oriented and can juggle multiple priorities. An enthusiasm for and knowledge of books for young readers is essential. Must be a strong writer and critical thinker who enjoys a wide range of titles for children and young adults--from literary to commercial.


* Assists with daily editorial activities, including proposal/manuscript screening and project follow-up. Provides administrative and clerical support to supervisor and editorial staff. Additionally, s/he acts as a liaison between authors, agents and different departments within the company

* Assists in all processes of book production from acquisition to publication

* Assists editors with ongoing book projects including evaluating and writing submission reports, writing jacket and sales copy. Keeps up to date regarding promotion, publicity, review status of books



Responsibilites include: 


  • Tracks, maintains grid, and evaluates agented submissions and unsolicited manuscripts
  • Reads and evaluates manuscripts, suggests cuts or revisions and writes reader reports.
  • Prepares front matter, body text, copyright, and cover text; formats, and traffics books through all stages of production
  • Drafts P&Ls, contract proposals, catalog copy, and Title Information sheets
  • Assists with scheduling of titles, creating spreadsheets, and list planning
  • Inter-faces with Library of Congress in the obtaining of CIP data and LC numbers.
  • Attends and contributes ideas at editorial meetings.
  • Provides computer support and training to editorial staff
  • Maintains and orders books for imprint bookroom
  • Writes jacket and catalog copy, fact sheets, blurbs and teasers
  • Reads review journals and competition titles to be aware of trends and competitor's lists
  • Acts as a liaison between authors, agents and different departments within the company
  • Conducts photo research as necessary
  • Provides clerical support, including filling/trafficking forms and other paperwork; filing; handling correspondence; answering phones; mailing, etc
  • Proofreads and copyedits
  • Assists in maintaining imprint social media presence
  • Cultivates editorial sensibility & builds skills necessary for future list building
