The Penguin Random House Legal Department is seeking to fill the position of a Legal Assistant who serve as the administrative liaison between the legal department and PRH’s two children’s publishing divisions and as paralegal for the company’s litigation management team.  Job responsibilities for the editorial divisions will include fielding legal queries from the children’s publishing divisions and supporting the two in-house attorneys who represent the two children’s divisions. 

 

The litigation project-related work will include:  monitoring pending litigations and claims and keeping up-dated abstracts of same for purposes of reporting to insurance company, auditor and corporate management; liaising with insurance company and insurance broker; strategizing with attorneys on responses to claims; spear-heading internal fact-gathering, research and investigation to prepare for defense or assertion of claim; keeping litigation files organized and accessible; managing any document collection and production; implementing and communicating, company-wide document retention policy. 

 

The assistant will also organize and participate in inter-company practice group of copyright lawyers. Other expected administrative responsibilities and skills will include developing facility with company databases (contracts, royalties, sales data), editing and finalizing documents (letters, legal briefs, affidavits, memoranda), creating power point presentations, handling billing from law firms and other outside vendors, and various filing responsibilities. This individual must be highly organized, flexible, communicate and interact effectively, efficiently and professionally with employees at all levels of the organization and will share responsibilities with other assistants in the department.

 

Candidates with at least 1 to 2 years administrative or paralegal experience are preferred. Successful candidates will be comfortable performing everyday support and administrative duties and will also demonstrate the ability to take ownership of on-going projects, take initiative, exercise independent judgment and to problem solve. Excellent organizational skills, communication skills as well as attention to detail are required. Candidates must  have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and set priorities. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs (word, excel, power-point) is essential.
