Job Description


Penguin Publishing Group seeks a Junior Designer to join our dynamic Advertising and Promotions Marketing team. This position requires strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to work on a variety of projects in an intense and fast-paced environment. The Junior Designer will manage simultaneous digital, print, and motion graphic projects to support marketing efforts across physical material, web, social, and email platforms. This individual will be an active team member who creates and executes customized campaigns across our list.

This role will be part of a fast-paced and versatile Marketing Design team, working primarily on the Avery, Tarcher, Portfolio, Sentinel, and Thesis imprints. Supporting the Executive Art Director and design team, the Junior Designer will have the opportunity to create marketing assets on a wide array of genres and adult nonfiction titles, from finance to novelty books and products, self-care to business management, cookbooks to memoirs, journals, crafting, and more. Recent titles and bestsellers include BUILD THE LIFE YOU WANT by Arthur C. Brooks and Oprah Winfrey, ATOMIC HABITS by James Clear, BEYOND ORDER by Jordan B. Peterson, RICH AF by Vivian Tu, and THE KOREAN VEGAN COOKBOOK by Joanne Lee Molinaro. REFLECTIONS AND RECIPES FROM OMMA'S KITCHEN by Joanne Lee Molinaro. The ideal candidate will be a creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic designer working closely with the design teams, marketers, and media buyers to brainstorm and create marketing, publicity, and promotional material and branding.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day work will include collaborating closely with Marketers to refine designs, incorporate feedback, and route work to internal departments, maintaining a positive, can-do  attitude in a highly deadline driven environment
  • Assisting the design team in conceptualizing and designing digital and print ad campaigns as well as promotional materials for assigned titles, including but not limited to social media images, cover animations/animated gifs and other short form videos, lifestyle photos, original illustrations, website assets, postcards, templates, and back of book ads
  • Creating digital and physical book mockups
  • Managing departmental tasks, remote and in-office
  • Traffic creative: preparing and releasing files to stakeholders, and sending projects to print
  • Attend weekly status, brainstorm, and media planning meetings
  • Remain current on art, design, and publishing trends offering new ideas on aesthetics and working styles into our department’s creative ecosystem to help keep our output relevant and timely

Qualifications


  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience as a staff designer in advertising or marketing preferred. Trade publishing marketing design experience is a plus, but not required for success in the role
  • Excellent design flexibility, including strong type design, to create across a wide range of aesthetics, audiences, and project types
  • Proven self-starter with strong task management skills and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate, problem solve creatively, and collaborate well with internal and external partners, and incorporating various stakeholders’ feedback under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently

Additional Information


The salary for this position is $60,000.  All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.

This hybrid position has occasional in-office responsibilities, including but not limited to physical dummies/mockups, photoshoots, in-office meetings/events, and ad hoc administrative projects. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA)
