Penguin Random House is seeking a well-organized Junior Designer to join our Berkley team. Supporting the Senior Art Director, this role will work on all stages of the book cover creation process from conception through design and proofing. This is a fantastic opportunity to tackle a wide range of responsibilities and create book covers for a variety of bestselling commercial fiction titles.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Managing and designing multiple cover projects by researching new ideas and trends, designing title fonts, and choosing color schemes.
  2. Setting up templates, designing layouts, routing materials within deadlines, gathering files for the printer, marking-up for the Production department, and checking color before final proofing.
  3. Preparing jacket, back cover, and original cover mechanicals from creation to final production.
  4. Archiving completed jobs to the server.
  5. Assisting the Senior Art Director with various tasks such as art and photo research.

 

Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Minimum of 6 months’ prior design experience
  • Strong knowledge and interest in typography, hand lettering experience a plus
  • Knowledge of printing, prepress file/art management and production
  • Highly creative thinker who is willing to explore multiple design options
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a deadline driven environment
  • Proficiency with Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
