Summary: This junior designer role is a unique opportunity to create engaging social media and online promotions for the award-winning and beloved Penguin Classics and Penguin Books imprints. If you are a designer that loves to read and is compelled by the intersection of strong visuals with profound storytelling, come join our highly creative small team of designers and hands-on art directors producing a large volume of work. We create online ads, hand-illustrated social quotes and book excerpts, e-cards for author events and sweepstakes, videos and animations, and we are constantly evolving with the changing marketing landscape. You will learn how to tailor your talents to amplify the voices of our authors to readers everywhere. This is a dynamic position from which to learn and grow as a designer, but also to read, listen, be curious, communicate and get involved in a larger group of innovative marketers and creatives.

Essential Functions and Responsiblities:

  1. Designs digital ads in a variety of sizes as well as online and print-based promotional materials such as e-cards, website assets, social media images, original illustrations, videos and animated gifs, infographics, postcards, bookmarks, and in-store posters and displays.
  2. Works closely with the Art Director to refine designs, collects and incorporates feedback, and routes to internal departments under tight deadlines. Prepares those files for final output.
  3. Researches online photo and video content for promotional use and retouches colors and tones on raw photos for maximum online impact
  4. Creates high quality Photoshop mockups of books in addition to some original photography
  5. Designs powerpoint presentations for sales conferences and author meetings.
  6. Handles some templated design jobs like back ads that get printed in books, with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  7. Keeps up to date on design and marketing trends and participates in group brainstorms and discussions.

 

Essential Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least 6 months of experience working in the design field; relevant internship and fulltime freelance experience will be considered; publishing knowledge a plus
  • Highly proficient in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
  • Excellent design ability, including strong type design required. Illustration ability is a plus.
  • Proven ability to create and revise multiple design projects under tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of animation (Adobe After Effects), video editing (Adobe Premiere) and html (Dreamweaver) preferred but alternately a strong desire to learn is welcomed
  • Ability to problem solve with the goal of working independently
  • Ability to express yourself verbally and communicate and collaborate with the team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail is important with our project count
  • Curiosity and questioning are highly valued as we navigate the changing landscape of social media together
