Editorial Assistant - Cooking - Clarkson Potter

Editorial Assistant – Cooking – Clarkson Potter

We are seeking an Editorial Assistant to join our team.  This position provides an opportunity to assist an Executive Editor, Editorial Director and Senior Cookbook Editor.

Clarkson Potter is the only dedicated lifestyle group within Penguin Random House. Founded in 1959, we are home to a community of award-winning and bestselling chefs, cooks, designers, artists, and writers—visionaries who seek to entertain, engage, and teach. Our diverse list is at once commercial and literary and includes cookbooks; illustrated gift books; and a growing line of paper products, such as journals, postcards, stationery, and games.

In addition to providing essential administrative support, this position also acts as a liaison among authors, agents, and all of the departments within the Crown Publishing Group. The assistant will also screen prospective projects, draft catalog and flap copy, write tip sheets, and, of course, also be a part of our dynamic team—from editorial and marketing meetings to launch presentations and author events. We are looking for a highly detail-oriented and organized self-starter who can juggle multiple tasks, is level headed, and who is invested in learning about illustrated lifestyle publishing—and the publishing industry in general.

Responsibilities

  • Providing administrative support, including scheduling, trafficking manuscripts, copying, etc.
  • Communicating with authors and agents and in house colleagues
  • Researching trends and competition, including comps
  • Writing flap copy and fact sheets
  • Running P&Ls and other sales reports
  • Drafting contract information sheets
  • Coordinating the editorial and production process in house
  • Collaborating with all in-house departments (publicity, marketing, sales, production, design, etc.)
  • Evaluating proposals and manuscripts

Requirements

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to multi-task successfully
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Interest and a desire to grow in publishing
  • An affinity and interest (knowledge is also a plus) for the lifestyle categories into which we publish: cooking, decorating and design, stationery and gift products.

Salary for this position is $40,000.  Full-time employees are eligible for our comprehensive benefits program. To apply, please submit your cover letter and resume through our online application process.
