<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">The Random House Children’s Books art team is seeking a highly motivated, creative individual with a desire to learn and grow in all aspects of children’s book design in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The Designer will be involved in execution of all phases of book design, from concept through mechanicals to final production, for a variety of illustrated formats such as board books, picture books, and chapter books, as well as special projects as needed under the supervision of the Senior Art Director.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for the effective, high-quality design of assigned titles from concept to final art using creativity, resourcefulness, and understanding of goals.
  2. Creates visual concepts, cover compositions, and interior layouts utilizing strong typography and design skills for individual titles and across series.
  3. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Prepares jacket and interior mechanicals for routing, approvals, and release to production per printing standards, with attention to detail, and in a timely way to maintain schedules and meet deadlines.
  4. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Creates digital sales material for assigned titles.
  5. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Works with illustrators from initial sketch development, revisions, and final art as needed for covers and interiors of assigned titles.
  6. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Illustrator, design, photo, or font research for projects as needed, responsible for bringing appropriate samples and or materials (i.e. comps, sample layouts, illustrator sheets) to art/editorial meetings.
  7. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Communicates in an effective, professional and courteous manner with supervisor, team, other departments, and outside agencies.
  8. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Attends and participates in production meetings, cover meetings, team meetings, and meetings with supervisor and editors for specific projects.
  9. Performs other related projects or duties as assigned or required.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Essential Qualifications/Requirements:

  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">4–5 years in a children’s book design publishing position with an emphasis on highly illustrated titles.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Strong Mac computer skills and technical knowledge, including a mastery of current InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator programs. 
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Knowledge of MS office programs.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, quality, and process, ability to prioritize and multi-task, and manage time efficiently.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Hardworking, self-starting, collaborative, and able to work independently.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Genuine passion for children’s books, illustration and typography.
  • Knowledge of children’s bestsellers, trends and illustrators, with an emphasis on young, illustrated books.
