Designer, Production - RHCB - (Hybrid)

The Random House Children’s Books art team is seeking a highly motivated, experienced individual with the project management and technical skills for digital art and print-ready file prep. This role is to support our Brand and License team with all phases of file preparation, text corrections, with an emphasis on design and digital pre-press file creation for all formats, including picture books, novels, novelty books, chapter books, board and activity books. The role is ideal for a highly organized, motivated, and skilled designer who can handle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment working on brands such as Dr. Seuss, Richard Scarry; licenses which include Disney, Nickelodeon, Minecraft, Sesame Street, and Universal properties as well as many others. The Production Designer will utilize their expertise to enhance project outcomes, anticipate and solve issues related to potential design and production related problems. 

Responsibilities: 

  1. Ability to refine design concepts, prepare print-ready files per production’s guidelines, and maintain brand and licensing consistency through multiple formats. 
  1. Apply changes to the layouts and text, with a focus on correcting color and creating digital pre-press files for all book formats. 
  1. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and develop design solutions that align with license or brand guidelines and objectives. 
  1. Self-manage workload to meet deadlines and prioritize accordingly. 

Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements: 

  • 4+ years of production design experience in a book publishing position or equivalent exposure to the publishing process. 
  • Attention to detail with a strong knowledge of pre-press, 1-color and 4-color printing process, and PDF workflow. 
  • Strong sense of typography, color theory, and layout design. 
  • Proficient in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, etc.) and other relevant design tools. 
  • Able to complete a wide range of digital tasks for print art and mechanical file prep such as special effects, die lines, templates, ink density and color correction. 
  • Proficient in photo manipulation techniques. 

This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities (approximately 2-3 days a week). We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, and NY). 

The salary for this position is $66,500.  All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
