Clarkson Potter, the premiere publisher of 4-color illustrated lifestyle, cooking, design and gift books, is seeking a talented and high-energy Designer to complete their team. The Designer will be designing both the covers and interiors on some of our most beautiful books. This position requires imagination, passion, and strong design skills. Candidates should be adept in all aspects of illustrated book design- including working with outside designers, illustrators and photographers, collaborating with editors and art director, keeping to schedules and budgets, maintaining the highest standards of production, and preparing presentation materials.


Specific responsibilities include:

  • Designs book covers and interiors for assigned titles from concepts into through final files following the direction of art director and editor
  • Develops visual concepts working with Creative and Editorial departments
  • Gains familiarity of author and subject matter by reading manuscripts and by reviewing author’s previously published work
  • Traffics jobs by outside designers/freelancers to ensure work is on schedule and error-free before sending to printer
  • Assists Art Director in special design projects including bound galley covers, PowerPoint deck designs, some photoshoot planning and production
  • Monitors costs relative to design for titles
  • Ensures that design supports product positioning, production requirements, and meets scheduled deadlines
  • Color corrects and reviews/approves production proofs
  • Works with outside vendors to commission original art work, illustrators and photographers; orders hi-res files; photo research
  • Performs other related projects or duties as assigned or required


Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in book (or related media) publicity
  • Thorough knowledge of desktop publishing programs (Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office)
  • Equipment- MACs, scanners, color fieries, proofers, digital cameras
  • Strong knowledge of typefaces and typography, illustration, photography, color and full color printing, correction and separation
  • Knowledge of production process
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to think creatively and be an effective problem solver, while staying in budget and on schedule
  • Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently
  • Good communication skills
