Associate Managing Editor, Manga


Penguin Random House Publisher Services is seeking an Associate Managing Editor to manage manga titles on behalf of our client Kodansha Comics. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Associate Managing Editor will primarily assign manga titles to freelance editors, provide support as necessary, and ensure on-time completion of those titles.


The successful candidate will have a passion for manga, comics, and/or Japanese culture, as well as confidence in their project management skills, including the ability to keep dozens of titles at different stages of the editorial process organized, and a strong communication toolbox to ensure freelance editors hit scheduling milestones. The position is perfect for a star project manager in any field looking to enter the publishing industry and gain a tip-to-tail understanding of the editorial and production process for manga/graphic novels.


For more than ten years, PRHPS has assisted Kodansha USA Publishing in making the Kodansha Comics imprint a runaway success, with hits including Sailor Moon, Attack on Titan, Battle Angel Alita, and AKIRA vaulting it into the top ranks of global English-language graphic novel publishers.



  • Check quality of files received from Kodansha and flag omissions.
  • Manage communication with freelancers and Kodansha, including participating in remote meetings with colleagues and client.
  • Manage transition of titles from in-house editor to freelancer and vice versa as needed.
  • Send book files, sample copies, and cover drafts to editors.
  • Check with printer to ensure delivery of proof books and cover proofs.
  • Set and enforce deadlines.
  • Ensure files are properly archived at the end of each project.



  • At least 2 years of experience in any field managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Organizational skills up to the challenge of tracking, checking, and adjusting multiple deadlines for dozens of projects at a time
  • Ability to prioritize under time pressure in spite of shifting/urgent client needs
  • Professional demeanor essential in communications with freelance editors and stakeholders
  • Comfortable creating new procedures where they don’t yet exist, amending procedures that need change, and following procedures that have been established
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel and Outlook
