Assistant Production Editor - Penguin Young Readers

Penguin Young Readers is seeking an Assistant Production Editor to work on all stages of our books, from electronically copyedited manuscripts through finished book. This role would assist a team of three production editors, who would train the Assistant Production Editor in all areas of the job with the intention of eventually sharing full workload and responsibilities. The position involves working on picture books, chapter books, middle grade and young adult fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels for three imprints, including books by authors such as Sabaa Tahir, Max Brallier, Divya Srinivasan, Tochi Onyebuchi, and Ruta Sepetys.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and correcting typeset passes of books (including proofreading any added text), as well as proofreading book covers and marketing materials.
  • Preparing manuscripts for the Design department by coding text in Microsoft Word according to house guidelines.
  • Reviewing sketches and final artwork for consistency and accuracy, for picture books and graphic novels.
  • Liaising with the Managing Editorial, Editorial, and Design teams.
  • Communicating with freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers, and setting up purchase orders in our in-house payment system.
  • Attending weekly update meetings with Production Editorial, Managing Editorial, and imprints to report on projects.

 

Please apply if you meet the minimum qualifications:

  • 6 months to 1 year of related experience, preferably in a copyediting or production department (internships or office experience considered). Book publishing experience is a plus but not required.
  • Strong copyediting/proofreading/fact-checking skills.
  • Willingness to learn and apply grammar rules and house style to aid clarity and understanding for readers, as well as being open to feedback and able to adapt to evolving norms and usage.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality of work.
  • Familiarity with current topics surrounding the use of inclusive language.

 

The following qualifications are not required, but good to have:

  • Familiarity with Merriam-Webster and the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, including Track Changes, and comment tools in Acrobat.
  • Proficiency in a non-English language.
  • Familiarity with children’s books.
