We are looking for a Java Developer to join our team.

This role will focus on modernizing, enhancing, and evolving our data collection technologies which support our ability to understand our readers and how we can best serve them.

We are looking for someone who loves working with first-party data applications. They have a passion and knack for optimizing, refactoring and modernizing, automating testing, and driving performance. While grounded in Java and Oracle, the role will frequently branch into a variety of languages and technologies as part of the effort to engage and modernize an ecosystem of applications and services.

In addition, there will also be plenty of opportunity to expand into and/or gain experience in a variety of disciplines from data security and big data management and data science to user experience and system design. The ideal candidate is constantly seeking to expand their knowledge and skills, and also enjoys cultivating knowledge and skills in others through mentoring, teamwork, and peer reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Write high quality production code as part of a small, cross-functional, agile team
  • Collaborate and communicate with team members across roles and departments
  • Create, improve and extend production APIs
  • Improve and extend automated customer messaging systems
  • Implement first-party data capture and instrumentation technology to support our data operations
  • Continuously reduce or eliminate technical debt
  • Maintain automated test suites to support CI/CD processes
  • Design and implement components, features, and bug fixes on a variety of systems
  • Integrate software components with internal and external APIs
  • Participate in and positively influence a collaborative, respectful, self-reflective team process
  • Participate in peer code reviews (as a reviewer and reviewee)

Skills

  • The ideal candidate would have around 3 years professional software development experience.
  • Technical skills including:
    • Java (primary language, Java 8 or greater, Spring framework, Junit, Hibernate, etc.)
    • Oracle (11g or greater, complex queries, PL/SQL, stored procedures, etc.) 
    • REST web services development  (JBoss, Resteasy experience a plus)
    • Git for versioning and team collaboration
    • Automated test suites to enable CI/CD processes
  • Additional experience with any of the following would be helpful:
    • Python
    • React
    • Containers (Docker, Kubernetes)
    • Cloud-native application design
    • Process automation
    • Handling first-party customer data collection safely 
    • Working with enterprise ETL processes and data feeds
    • Data pipelines to support dev/test/production data models
    • Working in Kanban, Scrum, or similar methodologies
