Production Design Assistant - (Hybrid)

The Random House Children’s Books Brand & License team seeks a hands-on and detail-oriented Assistant Production Designer who will be an essential member of Random House Children’s Books Art Department, supporting the Senior Executive Art Director and her team in the execution of all phases of bookmaking. 

The position will expose the Assistant Production Designer to all phases of file preparation, text corrections, with an emphasis on digital pre-press file creation for all formats, including picture books, novels, novelty books, chapter books, board and activity books. The role is ideal for a highly organized, motivated, and skilled designer who can handle multiple tasks at one time in a deadline-driven environment working on brands such as Dr. Seuss, Richard Scarry; licenses which include Disney, Nickelodeon, Minecraft, Sesame Street, and Universal properties as well as many others. 

 

Specific responsibilities include: 

  1. Assists Sr. Executive Art Director with specialized design tasks, assists with art, photo, font or illustratorresearch, prepares sales materials as well as mocked-up materials for presentations. Assists with licensor related tasks such as creating visuals for approvals, scheduling meetings, and collecting and sharing meeting notes. Prepares and prints materials for meetings, such as sample layouts, schedules, and artist research. 
  1. Assists supervisors with design-related tasks using InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator and Photoshop pre-press skills including but not limited to layout, text edits, and in-house proofing. Prepares/packages application files or press ready digital files. 
  1. Works collaboratively with art directors and production team to review and color correct printers’ proofs in the office. 
  1. Assists supervisors with licensor related tasks such as asset management and uploading titles to the various licensor approval sites 
  2. Proficient in Adobe Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator 
  3. Knowledge of pre-press, 1-color, and 4-color printing process, and PDF workflow 
  4. Strong Mac computer skills and technical knowledge including a mastery of Adobe Suite’s current InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator programs. 
  5. Strong eye for detail, color, and quality in the production process 
  6. Self-starter with the dexterity and prioritization skills to work on independent and collaborative projects with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment 
  7. Solutions-focused and highly resourceful as needs change in the licensor approval stages and production design processes

  • Minimum 6 months prior plus in a publishing position, or equivalent exposure to the publishing process. 
  • Four-year Graphic Design degree or equivalent graphic design program with emphasis on digital prepress and print production, printing technologies. 
  • Strong Mac computer skills and technical knowledge, including a mastery of current InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. 
  • Knowledge of MS office programs. 
  • Highly organized, able to handle multiple tasks, to prioritize and manage time efficiently. 
  • Strong attention to detail, quality and process. 
  • Exceptional professional written and oral communication skills. 
  • Willingness to take on responsibilities and demonstrates an ability to ask for support or help. 
  • Hardworking, self-starting and collaborative. 
  • Highly resourceful and flexible problem solver. 

 

This NYC-based role is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities for a minimum of two days a week in the office. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA). 

The salary for this position is $51,000.00. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
