Director of Client Sales - Penguin Random House Publisher Services

Penguin Random House Publisher Services provides sales and distribution services to a wide roster of independent client publishers.  The PRHPS Client Sales team is seeking a Sales Director to oversee two Sales Managers and a Sales Assistant and liaise with a group of Client Publishers. The Director of Client Sales will be responsible for working with adult publishers to find opportunities to grow their sales, liaise with sales reps and management, and help facilitate launch and sales conference meetings. The Director will also be involved in developing and implementing strategic initiatives with the publishers and providing sales forecasts. 


Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Reviewing sales targets of client publishers and providing forecasting
  2. Analyzing sales and creating reports to keep publishers up to date on budgets and growth
  3. Assisting adult publishers in bringing to their books to market and optimizing each book’s potential
  4. Reviewing list positioning with publishers each season to ensure necessary information and materials are provided
  5. Facilitating sales presentations during launch and sales conference and providing updates at various sales meetings
  6. Evaluating sales orders, point-of-sale, and inventory  to advise publishers on first print and reprint decisions
  7. Tracking title inventory and determining distribution, monitoring sales orders against goals and publishing priorities
  8. Working with sales channel heads to identify opportunities and shortfalls, and communicate those back to publishers
  9. Responding to requests from sales representatives for title information and title promotion opportunities
  10. Scheduling and conducting strategy sessions with client publishers regularly



  • Minimum of 6 years prior sales experience, publishing experience a plus
  • An understanding of the current bookselling marketplace
  • Proven ability to manage and support a staff
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Highly organized, with the ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities
  • A proven self-starter comfortable working remotely in a high profile position
  • Proactive decision maker with the ability to work well under pressure
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
