Associate Production Editor, Random House 1

We are seeking an Associate Production Editor to join our Random House Production Editorial team. In this role, you will be responsible for handling a variety of titles, including numerous hardcover-to-paperback conversions as well as some original titles, from manuscript to bound book and/or eBook. Working closely with the Editorial, Design, and Production teams, you will have the opportunity to work on titles across many genres, from popular and literary fiction to biographies, memoirs, history, sports, self-help, current affairs, business, and religion.


In this role, you will be responsible for:

  1. Hiring freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers for original titles
  2. Reviewing the work of freelancers, which include clearing manuscripts post-copyediting
  3. Collating changes from authors and freelancers in page proofs
  4. Coding and tagging manuscripts for design and composition
  5. Copyediting jacket and cover copy and paperback additional materials, including sales quotes and reading group guides
  6. Proofreading jackets and covers, captions, and additional materials
  7. Collaborating on and maintaining book schedules


Ideal candidates will meet the following requirements:

  • 2–3 years of publishing experience in a production editorial or managing editorial capacity
  • General facility of modern copyediting style and an interest in the evolution of inclusive language
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual and/or Words into Type style
  • Knowledge of electronic copyediting, using Microsoft Word
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong analytical, copyediting, and organizational skills
  • Exceptionally detail-oriented
  • Proven ability to set and meet deadlines
  • Is capable of rising to a challenge
