(Associate) National Accounts Manager- Penguin Random House

We are seeking an Associate National Accounts Manager or National Accounts Manager to join our Sales team and sell titles across various Penguin Random House adult imprints to key accounts.


In this role, you will predominantly take responsibility for both the selling and management of title base, promotions, and business relationships at Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s as well as RMS and Readerlink. You will work towards annual sales targets and specific goals as set by the Vice President of Mass Merch Retail National Accounts. Managing the intricacies of day-to-day account management, this highly visible role will be involved in the publishing process from book launches to on-sale dates and offers a unique insight into what exciting titles are coming up each season.


Responsibilities for this role include:

  1. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Preparing, researching, and presenting all relevant new titles, appropriate backlist titles, and special promotions to assigned accounts.
  2. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Optimizing all initial, frontlist and backlist opportunities through in-store and on-line promotions to ensure best ROI.
  3. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Managing co-op pools for each retailer and coordinating wholesale co-op promotions with corresponding National Account Manager.
  4. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Representing selected imprints to all parties in a professional and sales oriented manner.
  5. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Clearly demonstrating an in-depth understanding of the accounts and the lists being sold in varying formats.
  6. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Attending regular meetings, including, but not limited to, imprint launch, strategy, sales conference, and title marketing meetings.
  7. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Communicating regularly and effectively with Sales Management about efficacy of processes and any potential issues.
  8. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Visiting the accounts and appropriate distributors on a regular basis, at least once per season, to sell new book lists and backlist, to gather feedback on sell-through, account news, and other industry related information.
  9. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Maintaining accurate records of transactions and new title estimates.
  10. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Creating weekly and monthly reports for sales reps and accounts, ensuring accurate reporting, and analyzing sales trends.


Ideal candidates will meet the following requirements:

  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Minimum of 2 years prior sales experience, including account interaction, to be considered at the Associate manager level
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Minimum of 3 years of direct selling experience to be considered at the Manager level
  • Proven ability to build working relationships across all internal teams, departments and levels
  • Strong analytical skills ideally around sales trends and metrics geographically
  • Ability to showcase increase in sales within various departments
  • Excellent communication skills, including presenting
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team, particularly in a remote environment (currently due to pandemic)
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a deadline driven environment
  • Ability to travel up to 25% by car, train, or plane within the domestic U.S.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and Excel
