Design & Production Assistant – Ten Speed Press, Random House Publishing Group


We are seeking a Design & Production Assistant to join our team. He/She/They will have the opportunity to assist the 10-person Design team and 3-person Production team in the Ten Speed Press office in Emeryville, California. We are looking for a detail-oriented self-starter with an interest in the publishing industry, who can offer all-around administrative and project support.


Ten Speed Press, based in Emeryville, California, is an imprint of the Random House Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House, LLC, the world's largest general trade book publisher. We produce high quality, beautifully illustrated nonfiction books covering food and drink, art instruction and design, photography, gardening, gift, lifestyle advice, graphic art and novels, health and nutrition, career development, and writing.


Some Responsibilities:


  1. Efficiently maintain the book design and production process.
  2. Track multiple, simultaneous project deadlines and assist team members in various tasks needed to meet ambitious deadlines.
  3. Track, route, gather, upload, and archive printed materials and design files in multiple industry-standard formats.
  4. Track and process invoices.
  5. Act as liaison to other departments, such as Marketing, PR, and Sales, to field art-related questions and requests.
  6. Provide administrative support, including scheduling, copying, filing, etc.




  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, work independently, and meet deadlines
  • Interest in illustrated nonfiction books in categories such as food trends, pop culture, and creative arts
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage a schedule in a high-volume environment
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to multi-task well
  • A highly collaborative, adaptable team player with strong interpersonal skills
  • Proficient using Excel and Google Docs
  • Knowledge of PowerPoint, MS Word, FileMaker and especially Adobe CC are a plus
