Editor - WaterBrook and Multnomah

The WaterBrook and Multnomah imprints of Random House seek an Editor with experience in Christian children’s publishing to solicit, evaluate, acquire, and develop picture books, board books, middle grade fiction, and children’s series for preschool and up.  This position reports to the VP, Publisher of WaterBrook and Multnomah books.


Specific Responsibilities Include:


  • Acquire and edit approximately 15 new books per year.
  • Oversee all editorial aspects of book development, including manuscript development and editing; liaising with art director to provide illustration; copywriting including jacket, metadata, and other marketing copy as required.
  • Develop and maintain author and agent relationships (scout new talent, liaise with authors and agents).
  • Read and evaluate manuscripts and proposals; recommend proposals for acquisition
  • Work with Publisher on profit-and-loss valuations.
  • Negotiate acquisitions with agents and authors.
  • Consult with authors on manuscript revisions and overall book development.
  • Contract illustrators appropriate to each book’s unique needs and help guide conversations related to art deliverables, deadlines, and execution.
  • Maintain publishing/production schedules and meet deadlines.
  • Participate in editorial meetings.
  • Present titles at sales meetings and elsewhere as required.
  • Prepare supplemental material as needed, including title information sheets, early reading samples and other materials as requested for the sales force.
  • Keep abreast of the field at large (read trade journals and competitors' books; be aware of trends in both general market and Christian children’s publishing, so as to ensure the publishing list adapts as needed to marketplace needs and demands).
  • Handle special projects as assigned and work collaboratively with the larger team.
  • Perform other related duties, administrative tasks, collaborative functions as needed.




  • Minimum of 3 years of children's books editing experience, particularly four-color picture books
  • Strong communication skill, verbal and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to think creatively and work as a team to create a well-rounded list
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to attend to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Thorough understanding of the nuances of the market for Christian children’s books
