Java Engineer, Technology

Penguin Random House is looking for Java Engineer to join the Technology team at Penguin Random House, based at our London office.

You will be a key development role within the organisation and will join us to enable us to take control of our AEM platform form our external suppliers. Working as part of our technology team this role will be one of the organisation’s Java engineers and be responsible for building and maintaining high quality and maintainable code that is well performing, secure and follows all coding standards.

Your Key Responsibilities & Duties required for this role:

  • To build shippable software following Engineering standards in place.
  • Develop, build and maintain all aspects of the Adobe AEM platform Java code.
  • Ensure the code delivered is on time and is of the required quality.
  • Help to maintain the high standard of the code by following TDD and BDD
  • Review code of other developers to ensure the overall code quality and to encourage a collaborative development environment.
  • Keep up to date with the latest technologies and methodologies to ensure Penguin Random House stays ahead of the game.
  • Ensure a globally robust and highly scalable approach to development to support our growing number of global users and services.
  • Working with other developers across the entire technology real estate.


You will also need:

  • Solid experience of developing online or multi-channel transactional applications.
  • Solid experience in required technologies and concepts including:
  • Deep understanding of Java, JEE, servlets, JSP, tag libraries, and JSTL skills, combined with a strong understanding of enterprise Java frameworks (e.g., Spring, Hibernate).
  • Proficient in Adobe AEM foundational concepts, including the OAK repository, the AEM platform, and the use of core frameworks (e.g., Apache Sling, Apache Felix)
  • Solid understanding of all Adobe AEM building blocks, including templates, components, dialogs, widgets,etc and the AEM development and deployment process.
  • Experience in integrating/consuming Web Services and Rest API’s within Java web applications
  • Understanding of security standards and how to make sure they are met e.g. PCI
  • Understanding of code performance and how this can affect a websites overall loading
  • Experience using source control systems e.g. GIT, SVN
  • Scrum experience of working within a continuous and iterative delivery cycle.
