We are looking for someone as maternity cover to join the Penguin Random House Children’s Publishing House, based in the Strand, as a Head of Commercial Affairs. PRH Children’s publishes bestselling fiction, non-fiction and picture books, and is home to some of the very biggest authors and brands in UK publishing – including bestselling fiction from Roald Dahl, Peppa Pig, John Green, Eric Carle, Raymond Briggs, Beatrix Potter and Jeff Kinney. Within PRH Children’s, the Publishing House also controls licensing and development of brands beyond the book, into consumer products. This role will cover all financial and business aspects of the Penguin Ventures activities on a day to day basis.

You will play a vital role to the success of the division as a key member of the senior management team. Reporting to the Finance Director of Publishing, and working very closely day-to-day with the PRH Children’s MD, your role will be to provide valued support, influence and challenge on every commercial decision in order to drive maximum growth and profitability for the division.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising the division on all commercial matters including new title acquisitions, stock control, sales margins, special sales deals and author payments, and profit drivers
  • Overseeing results reporting, budgeting and forecasting – you will be managing a team of 4  responsible for the day-to-day accounting activities for the division
  • Advising on commercial matters such as contractual issues, and challenge performance where appropriate
  • Penguin Ventures – financial support and advice including liaising with external stakeholders
  • Looking for best practise and improvements in processes within the commercial team
  • Ensuring that PRH Group requirements are met and that areas of focus/concern for the Group are fed back to the division and acted upon
  • Being responsible for developing financial awareness throughout the division – e.g. feedback on title performance, delivering training sessions to non-finance staff to strengthen commercial focus
  • Reconciling balance sheet and key items such as stock and royalty advances
  • Reviewing and presenting month-end work, providing advice and support to your finance team who will produce the routine work
  • Working with other department heads to review and improve commercial and financial processes

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to take on a role that will be highly involved in key commercial decision making.

A qualified accountant, you will be an experienced business partner, with strong commercial acumen. You’ll be able to develop the trust of your colleagues and stakeholders in order to ensure that your highly-developed commercial judgement and analysis is listened to and taken on board. You’ll be able to think strategically, but also have strong attention to detail; ensuring day-to-day financial running of the division is completely accurate.

You’ll be able to present commercial challenges to the divisional MD and other stakeholders with rigour, sensitivity and conviction, and you’ll be a confident negotiator and presenter. You’ll also be a strong and inspiring leader of people; a team-player with emotional intelligence.

Passion and drive to make every story a success is at the heart of PRH Children’s, so you’ll be able to demonstrate a love of books and reading alongside your commercial capabilities.

If this sounds like your perfect role, please apply with a CV and cover letter by 31st August.
