We are looking for someone to join the Penguin General team as Financial Analyst.

 

Penguin General publishes literary fiction and non-fiction, bestsellers and prize winners, and is home to authors such as John Le Carre, Nick Hornby, Colm Toibin, William Trevor, Zadie Smith, Clare Balding and Jonathan Dimbleby.


This role will report to the Penguin General Business Manager and work very closely day-to-day with the Penguin General Editorial and Marketing teams.The Financial Analyst will be responsible for the collation, preparation and presentation of financial and management information, and the maintenance and development of reporting and information systems. This role liaises with a wide variety of internal departments in order to collate information, for example Sales, Editorial, Rights and Contracts.

 

Your responsibilities will include: 
 

Monthly Accounts:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day accounting activities of the Penguin General division, including the month-end process
  • Analyse sales and cost of sale by title, which provides supporting information for the month-end accounts process
  • Run Marketing Accruals
  • Prepare advance write off provisions
  • Run Sales Reconciliation reports
  • Review PG’s WIP balance with the Finance Services team

 

Month-End Reports:

  • Responsible for preparation of the monthly KPI pack and title sales report

 

Budgets and Forecasts:

  • Assist the Penguin General BM with the preparation and compilation of budget and forecast data and management reports, specifically:
  • Reconciling and analysing actual data to accounts and sales details
  • Checking Title detail to Publishing Schedule
  • Inputting and updating cost of sales data and projected sales data
  • Inputting and reconciling marketing data
  • Assisting with the production of Budget and Forecast Packs

 

Other Tasks:

  • Prepare acquisition P&Ls for sign off by the Penguin General BM, in conjunction with the Editorial and Sales departments
  • Assist with producing / produce ad-hoc P&Ls for titles and authors as requested
  • Deal with invoicing as required – this includes non-trade invoicing if needed
  • Prepare quarterly Royalty provision true-up exercise
  • Prepare quarterly Gross loss provision exercise
  • Reconciling the Penguin General balance sheet and key items such as stock and royalty advances
  • Business partnering with the Penguin General teams which could involve creating ad hoc reports
  • Assist the Penguin General in developing financial awareness throughout the division – e.g. quarterly feedback on title performance, delivering training sessions to non-finance staff to strengthen commercial focus

 

Some Employees May:

  • Work with more autonomy and less supervision as experience level grows
  • Work on ad-hoc or Group-wide projects

 

You’ll have advanced Excel, report-building and analytical skills, and will likely have accounting experience developed through study or work.

With excellent communication skills, you’ll find it easy to connect with colleagues and explain financial concepts in a simple way. Juggling multiple tasks will come naturally to you, and you’ll be keen to use your initiative for solving problems.
