An Assistant Editorial Manager is required to manage the copy-editing and proofreading process – from manuscript to printed book – of allocated titles to schedule and to Penguin standards on the Michael Joseph list of fiction and non-fiction titles. The role involves working closely with the editorial managers, commissioning editors, designers, production controllers and the freelance editorial team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • manage the progress of titles to ensure they deliver according to schedule, Penguin standards and relevant editorial costs
  • work on both original manuscripts and takeovers – mainly mono titles but colour too
  • implement schedules for mono titles and complex colour titles
  • oversee titles from original manuscript through copy-editing and proofreading to final files
  • handle copy-editor queries, collate proofs and check revises
  • input text corrections into InDesign for colour titles
  • manage and coordinate allocation of work to appropriate freelancers
  • check jackets and covers and other relevant materials
  • balance editorial integrity and commercial pragmatism
  • ensure the editorial system data is updated appropriately (Biblio)
  • ensure marketing and publicity material complies with Penguin editorial standards

Experience/skills/attributes required:

  • experience of copy-editing and proofreading work
  • the ability to manage a list and organize a team of freelancers
  • the drive to maintain tight schedules
  • a complete understanding of the processes through which a text passes from typescript to bound copy, and an appreciation of the cost implications of corrections
  • a good working knowledge of other departments, particularly design and production
  • strong Word skills
  • an understanding of InDesign
  • some knowledge of copyright law
  • strong organizational skills

We’re looking for someone who can work with enthusiasm, initiative and flexibility as well as being comfortable working independently. You will of course have strong written and verbal communication skills and be a natural team player.

If you have experience in copy-editing and proofreading, and working in-house on tight schedules, then we’d love to hear from you.

Please apply with a CV and covering letter, by 24th August.
