Operations Finance Manager (12m FTC)



We’re looking for an Operations Finance Manager to join our Distribution Finance team here at Penguin Random House UK on a 12 month fixed term basis. This role will be predominantly based at our centre in Colchester, Essex but will involve travel to our Grantham (Lincolnshire) and London sites too.


Reporting to the Finance and Commercial Director, you’ll act as a finance business partner to the Operations teams and will work closely with the business to gain a high level of understanding of the drivers behind cost and efficiency, and the relationships with key suppliers.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Providing leadership and day to day management of two Operations Accountants based in Frating and Grantham
  • Ensuring the accurate and timely preparation of monthly and year end results reporting 
  • Full review and implementation of improved monthly reporting process and KPI reporting
  • Leading the Distribution budgeting and forecasting process, ensuring accurate and timely preparation in line with the centrally managed timetable and working closely with operational heads and with our central Finance team
  • Responsibility for reconciling the Balance Sheet and for key balance sheet items
  • Ensuring that the company follows group policies (both operational and financial)
  • Managing business operational roadmaps to drive profit maximisation actions and track progress
  • Developing relevant reporting and information systems
  • Working with other department heads to improve processes
  • Working with the wider finance team to deliver group objectives
  • Key input into supplier contract renewals and tenders
  • Ensuring that best practice financial controls are followed, and that Group accounting policies are correctly applied to the company
  • Conducting regular cost centre reviews with department heads
  • Preparing and presenting targeted information to a range of stakeholders as required (e.g. warehouse team leaders, distribution leadership team, other department heads)


To be successful in this role you’ll be a highly analytical, qualified accountant with experience of working with and implementing financial management reporting within a distribution/supply chain/logistics environment ideally.


The ability to interpret trends, produce relevant and impactful management  reporting and implement innovative solutions will be key, alongside building relationships and collaborations that challenge, support and influence at all levels of the business. Your communication skills will be excellent, and your IT skills, particularly in Excel, will be strong.  Experience of SAP, Business Objects and Anaplan would be beneficial, but not essential as training will be provided.

Salary: £55,000 – £60,000 depending on how your experience and skills align to the role, plus bonus and benefits.
