Group Payroll Manager (18m FTC), Colchester

You will lead and supervise the company payroll function, ensuring that the highest level of customer service is provided to internal customers. To take a lead on payroll-related projects, including looking at all processes/controls; reviewing and improving them to support the needs of the business. To ensure that the company payroll function serves as a proactive support service within the business. To ensure full compliance with statutory requirements and audits.


Your main responsibilities will include:


  • Management of the payroll function, ensuring timely and accurate completion of 5 monthly payrolls and 1 weekly payroll.
  • Working with the Assistant Payroll Manager to ensure they effectively manage their team (3 staff) and deliver the highest level of customer service both internally and externally through ongoing coaching, training and development.
  • Provide cover with day to day payroll work as required in the absence of team members.
  • Liaising with internal departments: HR, Finance, Pensions
  • Liaising with external departments: Pension Providers, HMRC, National Statistics Office, BACS.
  • Ensuring full compliance with auditors on internal, external and pension scheme audits.
  • Managing the service provided by FMP Payroll Bureau.
  • Checking and reviewing invoices relating to payroll costs.
  • Managing the ActivPayroll contract and service for the foreign payrolls; US, Ireland, Relias Learning.
  • Reconciling all monthly payroll reporting for manager sign off.
  • Completing Quarterly comparisons between Cascade, HR Software, and Payrite, payroll software.
  • Carrying out Monthly e-filing downloads with HMRC.
  • Controlling new members, finance payments, opt outs etc. for the NEST pension’s schem under auto-enrolment requirements.
  • Checking the BACS reports monthly on-line
  • Compiling monthly Intercompany Finance Cross Charges.
  • Organising all reports from the Flexible Benefits Portal, received monthly from HR, into usable documents for the Payroll Team. This is for both Flex deductions and Pension amendments.
  • Setting up the monthly Flex P11D report, for reference and for the future compilation of P11D’s.
  • Carry out monthly checking, on all Flex Bens amendments, Pension amendments, ensuring the latter also correct on Cascade.
  • Updating StopLock reporting with Flex Bens amendments, where applicable, for the team to use to calculate any final deductions from leavers.
  • Updating PAYE reconciliations and Pension reconciliations for finance.
  • Checking all Direct Debit collections on Friends Life e-serve, querying differences.
  • Completing Annual P11D compilation, despatch to staff and transmission to HMRC.
  • Any other reasonable duty in line with the level of the role.

You will also need:


  • Full knowledge of all statutory Payroll procedures.
  • Previous managerial experience essential, with particular experience in running a large complex payroll.
  • Preferably with experience of the Payrite Software
  • Fully competent computing skills, especially in Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of using QTAC system preferable.
  • A good understanding of the payroll links and interfaces with Finance.


Qualifications Required:


  • Minimum Diploma level in Payroll Management but MSc in Payroll Management preferable.
